Assessment Goals

Educational Goals for the Undergraduate English Major (B.A./B.S.E.) and other undergraduate programs within the department.

The Department of English has adopted the following goals for student learning: 

A.  Students will demonstrate proficiency in writing in the areas of grammar, logic, and rhetoric.

B.  Students will demonstrate proficiency in their ability to engage with texts, using multiple critical perspectives.

C. Students will demonstrate proficiency in conducting and applying research.

  Educational Goals for the Graduate English Major (M.A.)

The following goals for student learning were adopted for the M.A. program in English: 

A.  Students will demonstrate a high level of proficiency in writing in the areas of grammar, logic, and rhetoric.

B.  Students will demonstrate a high level of proficiency in their ability to engage with texts, using multiple critical perspectives.

C.  Students will demonstrate a high level of proficiency in conducting and applying research. 

The department’s progress in meeting these goals is measured by its assessment plans for the Composition Program, the B.A. and B.S.E. programs, the Creative Writing program, and the M.A. program.  Assessment in the Department of English is designed and administered by a committee of the faculty.  Watch this page for further details about assessment activities in the department, and about the implementation of the department’s program assessment plans.
