GAGE Conference
Slovakia and Poland
Tatra Mountains, 2000

Introduction

GAGE held a field conference in Slovakia and Poland in September, 2000. The field orientation for the conference was glaciation of the Carpathian Mountain system of central Europe--see Carpathian project. The conference venue, Spišská Stará Ves, Slovakia, is a small town located at the boundary between two national parks, the Pieniny National Park and High Tatra National Park.

Juraj Janocko organized the conference; he was assisted with field excursions in the Slovakian Tatras by Rudolf Halouzka and in the Polish Tatras by Wojciech Raczkowski. Participants included professional scientists and science students from the Czech Republic, Estonia, Poland, Slovakia, the United Kingdom, and the United States.

28th Excursion for glacial/periglacial landforms and sediments in the Slovakian Tatras.
29th Excursion for glacial/periglacial landforms and sediments on the Polish side of Tatras. Departure or return to Zdiar, Slovakia.

Publication

Papers presented at the conference will be published along with elaboration of Quaternary geology in Slovakian Tatra Mountains. All papers will be published (in English) in the Slovak Geologic Magazine after the meeting.

Future plans

A special symposium is being organized on reconstruction of paleo-icestreams. It will take place in Århus, Denmark in October, 2001. Within this theme GAGE solicits papers on the use of GIS and remote sensing techniques for identification and modelling of former icestreams. For more information, contact Chris Clark (United Kingdom). Colleagues from Slovakia, Poland, the United Kingdom, and the United States agreed to continue efforts on glaciation of the Carpathian Mountains.
