Introduction
The central European glaciotectonic database and map project includes Poland, eastern Germany,
Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Byelarus, Ukraine, Russia and adjacent territories bordering the
southern and eastern margins of the Baltic basin.
The aim of this project is to compile a comprehensive GIS database on glaciotectonic features.
Related geographic and geologic features will be included. The glaciotectonic database will
be integrated with digital elevation models and satellite imagery. The goals of this project
are to create the first region-wide assessment of the types and distribution of glaciotectonic
phenomena, which can be evaluated in the overall geologic context of ice-sheet glaciation in
the southern and eastern Baltic region of Europe.

Dr. Andrzej Ber is overall leader of the central European glaciotectonic project, and local
coordinators are responsible for compiling information from each portion of the region. These

Project status
Organizational meetings have been held in the region. A meeting for Polish contributors
took place in Jan. '96, at which time a classification scheme and map legend were agreed
upon for glaciotectonic features. All project coordinators met in Sept. '96 at Palanga,
Lithuania. At this meeting, the Geological Institute of Poland was selected to be the
center of coordination for the project. Base maps have been selected, and information has
been submitted for some areas. Discussions are underway concerning technical aspects of
GIS--data entry, software, etc.
A project-leaders' conference and field trip
were held in southwestern Poland, Aug. 31 to Sept. 5, 1997.
The meeting took place near Wroclaw in connection with the IV Conference on Stratigraphy of the Polish
Quaternary. At this meeting, the status of glaciotectonic mapping was reviewed for each region, and
the following decisions were reached.
- General agreement on overall classification scheme for glaciotectonic features. Main classes will
apply to the whole area of mapping, but each region may develop appropriate subclasses.
- Regional leaders are needed for eastern Germany and the Kaliningrad sector of Russia.
- Minimum scale for compilation of data on base maps is 1:500,000. Larger scales may be utilized
where appropriate.
- March 31, 1998 will be the schedule for preliminary submission of glaciotectonic data to A. Ber.
- Digitizing and editing of GIS database will take place at Polish Geological Institute under supervision
of W. Gogolek.
- Final products and map publications will be decided later. A preliminary map should be ready
for demonstration in Sept. 1998, and near-final maps will be displayed at the INQUA Congress in
Aug. 1999 (South Africa).
Substanital progress was demonstrated at the GAGE conference in Sept. 1998--see
Warsaw 1998. At this meeting, preliminary national maps were
presented for Belarus, Estonia, Germany (northeastern sector), Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia
(Kaliningrad sector), and the Ukraine. During the following year, these and other maps were
revised and further developed. Compilation and regional map production will be carried out at
the Polish Geological Institute. Revised, near-final maps were displayed at the INQUA Congress
in 1999.
