Palanga, Lithuania Amber Museum The Lithuanian Amber Museum, located in Palanga, is devoted to all aspects of amber and houses over 25,000 specimens (15,000 with "Jurassic insects!").
The Palangos Gintaro Muziejus, placed online via the Lithuanian Art Museum, is located at 17 Vytauto Street, Palanga, Lithuanian, LT-5720 (tel. (+370-36) 53 501). This amber museum opened in 1963 and is housed in a former mansion of Count Feliksas Tiskevicius (built in 1897). The museum theme is both the formation of amber and the role amber has played in cultural history. Stone Age amber artifacts were found between 1860-1881, near Juodkrante, Curonian Lagoon, while mining for amber. The Lithuanian sea coast (Palanga, Sventoji) is the site of Neolithic amber artifacts (4000-1600 BC) and many amber artifacts have been found in graves dating from 1st - 3rd century. | Amber Museum Gallery - Gintaro Galerija Muziejus, http://www.ambergallery.li/english, is located in Nida and Vilnius, Lithuania, and this website is an excellent introduction to their treasures. This museum/gallery displays amber from an artists perspective with prepared amber scuplted by Lithuanian jewellers and folk artists. In Vilnius, the Mizgiriai Amber Gallery is located in the Old City, established in 1998. In addition to the amber, archeological artifacts are on display that were uncovered within the historic building. The Nida branch is expanding to include a working display of amber artists by summer of 2002.
