What is the Course About?
This online course will enhance your knowledge of the world of gems. For the hybrid section that is online and meets face-to-face, students will experience hands-on identification and testing methods of natural and synthetic materials. All students will explore gem lore, describe sources and origins of gems, and assess the cut and polish of gem materials. Throughout the semester we will use trusted online and print gem and gemology resources, along with a guided tour for all who can attend the KC Gem and Mineral show in March!

How is the Course Offered?
GO 340 ZB and ES 567 XB are offered entirely online. A combination of online and classroom meetings are offered in sections GO 340 ZA and ES 567 XA. Meetings will be held at the ESU Metro Learning Center in Overland Park, KS on 2/1, 2/15, 3/8, 4/5, and 4/26 from 6:00 p.m.—8:50 p.m.

Who is teaching this course?
Dr. Aber is a geologist, certified gemologist, and library science educator with degrees from the University of Kansas, the Gemological Institute of America, and Emporia State University. She has taught at Emporia State University for over 20 years.
