Elementary Education

The ESU elementary education program prepares students to be critical thinkers, creative planners, and effective practitioners. About Emporia State's Program

As one of the first institutions of higher education in Kansas, ESU continues to pioneer educational excellence through university-wide involvement in teacher education. As an elementary education major at Emporia State, you experience that educational excellence through:

• A nationally recognized teacher education program
• Classes taught by nationally recognized professors
• An extensive observation and participation program that allows you to fully explore career options while choosing a major
• A year-long Professional Development School clinical experience supervised by a master teacher along with close contact with the university  
• Currently, Professional Development School sites are located in the Emporia area, the Kansas City area, Topeka, & Butler County
• Assistance in planning your program from the Elementary Education Advising Center

 

The Real World of Teaching

Early in the elementary teacher education program you explore the teaching profession, issues in education, and the nature of children in the classroom through the "Introduction to Teaching" course. Later courses build knowledge and skills necessary for successful classroom management, instructional planning, large and small group instruction, and evaluation of learning. Methods courses provide strategies for teaching subject matter content to diverse students in inclusive classrooms. When you complete your courses at ESU, you will receive a Bachelor of Science in Education degree. You also will be recommended for a Kansas teaching certificate in elementary education, which qualifies you to teach in kindergarten through grade six.

As an elementary education major, you gain valuable real world teaching experience by:

• Observing children in the classroom during your sophomore year
• Participating in group teaching in the Block 1 classes
• Conducting reading instruction
• Professional Development School experience in the senior year
• Teacher work sample provides a performance assessment of the future teacher’s ability to plan, implement, and assess instruction

 

Areas of Concentration

Elementary education majors must complete either 9 credit hours of elective courses or complete one of the following areas:

• Early childhood (Unified concentration)
• English (middle school)
• English as a second language (Licensure)
• Math (middle school)
• Science (middle school)
• Social sciences (middle school)

 

Elementary Partnership Programs

Partnership programs with Butler Community College and Kansas City Kansas Community College allow students to complete the ESU elementary program in Butler County or Kansas City.
