Graduate Program - Master
Teacher
The Master Teacher program is intended for the teaching practitioner in settings from early childhood through adolescence and young adulthood. The candidate will learn to deal more effectively with diverse student learners and move from theory to best practice in the field. The candidate may choose from two areas of concentration: Reading Specialist, or Elementary Subject Matter (online degrees).
Each student must complete the six starred (*) introductory and research courses within the first 15-21 hours before taking the other required courses in the program. A core knowledge examination over those courses should be taken during the semester following the completion of the 15 core credits. When the introductory core courses are completed, the core knowledge exam is passed, and admission requirements are fulfilled, the student would be removed from probation and allowed to enroll in the remaining coursework.

Students will select one concentration from the following options.
Master Teacher - Reading Specialist
Reading specialist is designed for educators who wish to pursue the reading specialist endorsement. (Note: additional courses, taken as electives, required for reading specialist endorsement.)
EL 721 Reading Theory & Literacy Practices: Elementary, 3 hours
EL 723 Reading Theory & Literacy Practices: Secondary, 3 hours
EL 823 Analysis of Reading Assessment & Instruction I, 3 hours
EL 825 Analysis of Reading Assessment & Instruction II, 3 hours
Master Teacher - Elementary Subject Matter
Elementary Subject matter is designed for educators who wish to improve their teaching, management, and assessment skills.
ED/EL 535 Cultural Awareness for Educators, 3 hours
Choose three of four:
EL 801 Improvement of Instruction in Language Arts, 3 hours
EL 802 Improvement of Instruction in Elementary School Math, 3 hours
EL 803 Improvement of Instruction in Science Education, 3 hours
EL 804 Improvement of Instruction in Elementary Social Studies, 3 hours
Finally candidates will take a capstone course:
EL 854 Action Research …, 2 hours
Electives
Master Teacher - Elementary Subject Matter (7 hours)
The student, with assistance and approval from the advisor, will select seven additional credits of electives.
Master Teacher – Reading Specialist (9 hours)
In order to receive conditional reading specialist licensure, the courses listed below MUST be selected as electives, plus two additional hours.
EL 725 Teaching Reading to Diverse Learners, 1 hour
EL 827 Practicum in Reading: Elementary, 2 hours
EL 828 Practicum in Reading: Secondary, 2 hours
EL 829 Reading Specialist as a Professional, 2 hours
