Distance Education


The academic assistance areas that are provided for all online and off-campus students include:

  • Disability Services

    The Office of Disability Services facilitates and coordinates accommodations and services for students with documented disabilities at Emporia State University. Emporia State has a long history of providing services for people with disabilities. We are committed to meeting the unique needs of the students. The office also promotes a successful transition to college and to work, campus and community resource information, disability awareness, and voter registration information.

    Students are encouraged to register with the office prior to enrolling in classes. Students can self-identify to the office by submitting documentation and making an appointment to address individual needs. Documentation requirements are unique to each disabling condition.

    The Office of Disability Services is located in the basement of Memorial Union, (620)341-6637, (620) 341-6646 (TTY), or (620)341-6640 (Fax). Contact the office for reference materials. The Relay Service is available for those with communication disabilities and can be reached by calling 711 from an ESU telephone.

  • Library Resources

    The William Allen White Library supports the academic, research, and service programs of ESU. To meet individual and Distance Education needs of university, community, and Kansas citizens, the library provides access to resources in print, multimedia, and electronic formats. Students also have access to the Kellogg Online Catalog and other online search tools.

  • Laboratory Assistance (writing, reading, mathematics)

Is an online community where graduate students help each other succeed! Making the most of the graduate school experience means having the right tools and the right information. Proctoring Guidelines/Proctor Agreement FormStudents are responsible for finding a qualified proctor to administer each exam. The proctor must be a teacher, professor, or administrator in a nearby secondary school,college, university, or testing center. In some instances, a professional employment supervisor may also serve as a proctor, with the instructor’s permission. For assistance finding a proctor, students can contact a guidance counselor, an academic advisor,or the dean of students or registrar’s office at a nearby college, university, high school, or local testing center. The Consortium of College Testing Centers is an organization that has testing centers across the country and abroad that provide proctoring services to distance students near their homes. ESU is a member of this consortium. Centers are located in 44 states and Canada. Any fees for proctoring at a specific site selected by the student are the student’s responsibility. Students submit their proctor information to the ESU Distance Education Office no later than a week before the campus exam.

The Memorial Union Bookstore provides distance students the opportunity to order textbooks entirely online and have materials shipped directly to them. Students are not required to purchase textbooks from this vendor.

Laboratories ESU provides a variety of labs to help off-campus and distance students in the area of writing, reading and mathematics.

 

The ESU Helpdesk assists students with technology and computing needs. Their primary areas of support include:

  • Campus network and wireless connections (new requests, configuration, access failure, etc.)
  • E-mail

  • PC and Mac problems (operating system, virus eradication, etc.)

Technology Help
There is also help available the ESU Tech Site to assist students with answers, software, wireless, blackboard,etc.
Also, if you are having problems with your computer, the helpdesk will be able to remotely assess your computer to help you diagnosis the problem.

Student ID Number - Student ID numbers have been assigned to all ESU students for conducting university business including registering for classes and requesting transcripts. ID numbers are sometimes referred to as your "E number" or your "Banner Student ID".

Acessing ESU email account - Emporia State University students enrolled in Distance Education distance courses are REQUIRED to maintain an email account through Emporia State University. Click on this link to find information on accessing your email.

Accessing BuzzIn - Buzz In is Emporia State University's web portal. Similar to other web portals, such as My Yahoo or My MSN, Buzz In will allow users to personalize and customize displayed content to suit their information needs. The Buzz In Portal will serve as the single point of entry for the university's information assets. Not only will the portal allow access to Banner self-service modules, but will also form a cohesive and flexible interface that will support the integration of other university systems such as Blackboard, MyData, and StudentAccess. Blackboard

Blackboard is the course portal through which all online courses are ESU are delivered. You can access blackboard directly through BuzzIn. Login to BuzzIn and click on the Blackboard Link located on the right. For help with Blackboard, please click on the Blackboard Help Link.

Make sure you understand policies related to your responsibilities as a student at ESU. The important policies include

Policy on Adding, Dropping and Withdrawing - Any student who wishes to drop, add, or withdraw from a course offered through Distance Education must make the request in writing or by telephone to the Distance Education office. Students may also use the online drop/withdraw form.

Refund Policy - Students should inquire with the Cashier's Office about refund amounts. Contact Pam Norton or call 620-341-5135.

Tuition and Fee payment Emporia State University is pleased to offer a streamlined payment process to students, faculty and staff. It is Emporia State University policy that students must pay all charges in full prior to the drop date for undergraduate students. Graduate students will not be dropped and will be assessed administrative fees. If a student does not expect to have their balance paid in full by this date, they must enter into an Extended Payment Agreement. To access your account, go to BuzzIn and go to My Account to see your tuition payment or to pay your tuition.

Request for Approval of Overload Form

Undergraduate students may take up to and including 18 hours with permission of their advisor. (A student enrolled in one or more developmental courses will be limited to a total semester enrollment of thirteen credit hours. This applies to new students beginning in Fall 1999 and thereafter.) Graduate students may take up to and including 16 hours with permission of their advisor (12 hours for graduate assistants).

Students with superior academic college records may petition to exceed the above stated loads. Written approval to carry an overload must be secured from the student's advisor, the chair of the department of the student's major, and the graduate dean, if for a graduate student. Forms are available in the Registration Office. The overload form must be processed before the end of the first week of classes. Failure to process the form by this time may result in withdrawal from all or part of the student's classes.

ITV Courses:

In an ITV classroom, digitally compressed signals make it possible to offer two-way interactive audio and video conferencing between ESU and one or more sites. Therefore, your instructor may or may not be in your specific classroom. However, a site monitor will be present to maintain the conferencing equipment. The Emporia site is located in Visser Hall 111. Students participating at other sites should contact the site for more information

Emporia State University students enrolled in Distance Education distance courses are REQUIRED to maintain an email account through Emporia State University. Your new Gmail account has a vastly larger mailbox size, with no message expiration date. Gmail mailboxes will be 25GB, which provides 250 times more space for emails and attachments. Access to Google Docs, Calendar, Chat, and Drive for easy collaboration with peers and faculty. More effective intergration with mobile devices. 3. Access Buzz In:

Buzz In is Emporia State University's web portal. Buzz In will allow users to personalize and customize displayed content to suit their information needs. Buzz In integrates all university systems such as Blackboard, MyData, and StudentAccess. How to Access Buzz In  

How to View Your Schedule: Go to the Student Self-Service Links section on the Academic Life tab and select Registration. Then select Student Detail Schedule.

How to View Your Account: Go to the My Account section on the Academic Life tab. The total amount you owe the university will appear.

Obtaining Access to the Academic Life tab: Only students in Active Status will have access to the Academic Life tab. If you cannot view the Academic Life tab and are new to ESU, please contact either the Admissions Office (1-877-468-6378) or the Graduate Office (1-800-950-4723) to check on your admission status.

4. Verifying/Updating Your Contact Information:

  • Login to Buzz In 
  • Select the Academic Life tab.
  • Select any links under Registration Tools.
  • Select the Personal Information tab.
  • Select the appropriate link to verify your address, phone, and email address.
  • Check to see if you have provided us with a day-time phone number. This is important so that we can contact you regarding class cancelations and any important items affecting your enrollment.
  • If incorrect, please call 1-877-332-4249 or email distance@emporia.edu with your updated information. Be sure to include your Student ID when contacting us.

 5. Order Your Textbooks from the Memorial Union Bookstore:

 Textbooks are available through the Memorial Union Bookstore. You can order them online, by phone, or in person.  Please visit the online textbook system at http://emporia.bkstore.com. For more information call (620) 341-5214, (620) 341-6444 or emailmmcrell@emporia.edu.

 6. Email your Instructor 1-2 Weeks Prior to Class (Internet Students Only)

9. Maintain Your Computer Equipment and Virus/Spyware Protection:

Computers are used for coursework, research, and communicating with instructors.  Please visit the computer recommendations.

10. View Your Grades Online:

Login to Buzz In, go to the Academic Life tab, Student Records tab, and select the correct term under Final Grades.

11. Familiarize Yourself with ESU's Drop, Withdrawal, & Refund Policies:

Any student who wishes to drop, add, or withdraw from a course offered through Distance Education must make the request in writing or by telephone to the Distance Education office. Students may also use the online drop/withdraw form. University Policies, refunds and collection policies.
