When traveling abroad, do not assume that individual medical insurance coverage will provide any routine or unexpected medical expenses. Before departing, include contacting your insurance carrier as a part of the planning process.

If using a service animal, contact the travel carrier when making the reservation.

Resources that may be useful include:

1. Mobility International

New Horizons for the Air Traveler With a Disability is published by the Department of Transportation. It includes accessibility of airports and aircraft; requirements for advance notice, and personal care attendants. This is available from the Consumer Information Center 2-D, P. O. Box 100, Pueblo, CO 81002

2. Access Travel: Airports. It provides accessibility features of the facilities and services at 533 airports worldwide. This is available from the Consumer Information Center 2-D, P. O. Box 100, Pueblo, CO 81002

3. Amtrak publishes a booklet for people with disabilities using their services. For additional information, contact Access Amtrak at 800/USA-RAIL or 800/872-7245.

4. For those traveling on Greyhound, contact 800/752-4841 or 800/345-3109 (TDD).

5. The International Travelers Point and Conversation Guide is available and allows a person with a disability to communicate through pictures. The guide provides information on six topics: services, shopping, sports & entertainment, transportation, accommodation, and food related issues. 6. Another resource published by Self-Help for Hard of Hearing People, Inc., is the Hotel Accommodations Request Card for people with disabilities.
