Screen Reading Software
Screen reading software gives students with disabilities the opportunity to access written text independently, through the use of computers. Our office currently provides two types of screen readers, Kurzweil 3000 and JAWS. The Kurzweil 3000 software is designed for people with disabilities where their reading is impacted. JAWS is also a screen reader but is designed for people who are blind or visually impaired. The office does not check-out this type of equipment to students. The campus does have the technology available for students to use at anytime during regular operating hours. There are multiple resources available in the office for students to seek funding for technologies on their personal computers.
Screen reading devices make it easier to complete reading requirements by giving students the opportunity to access the printed information independently. Planning ahead for this need is crutial to receiving converted materials in a timely fashion. In order to ensure that required reading materials are converted on time, we ask students to meet with the director of the office in advance. For target dates for a given semester's needs, please communicate with the director of the office. The office will make every attempt to convert materials for all requests.
