Classroom Accommodations

Students with disabilities may be eligible for accommodations and services in the classroom. For the determination of eligibility, contact the director of the Office of Disability Services. Students are required to share their Accommodation Letters with professors prior to the receipt of accommodations and services.

The office recommends that students communicate with all professors they are requesting accommodations from as early in the semester as possible. Contacting professors before the semester begins is in the best interest of the student. It also allows the professor to assist students with disabilities in a timely fashion. All classroom accommodations and services are determined on an individualized, case-by-case basis. Accommodations and services are approved by the Office of Disability Services and are based on the impact of the disability and the substantial limitation to the student. Accommodations in the classroom are intended to level the playing field for those with disabilities, just as they are in other environments. For example, for assistance in securing a note-taker, students with disabilities need to ask the professor for assistance as early in the semester as possible so an announcement of the need can be made to classmates without disclosing who the notes are for. Emporia State uses a Peer Note-Taking System. Copies of a peer's notes in the class are shared with students with disabilities, if they are eligible. Notes are not shared as an accommodation before the Accommodation Letter is shared with the professor.

In the event there are any questions or concerns about classroom accommodations, students with disabilities need to contact the Office of Disability Services as soon as possible so that services that do not pose a fundamental alteration to the course or program can occur within an appropriate time frame.
