ABOUT XI PHI
______________________________________________________________________________________
Because in 1922 state funds did not provide for certain needs on the Kansas State Teachers College campus, an ambitious group of 24 student leaders organized a fund-raising campaign to finance the construction of a Union building, the purchase of a pipe organ for Albert Taylor Hall, and the replacement of an old wooden grandstand in the athletic field.
The evidence of such an enterprise by so few students won the enthusiasm and support of the entire campus. President Thomas Butcher declared a special holiday. The 24 captains, each with a team of 10, solicited every student and faculty member on the campus, and the day’s pledges totaled more than $88,000.
The first constitution provided for 24 members, all to be upper classman. A faculty sponsor was to come from a former member of the organization. The members of Xi Phi are those who strive to accomplish whatever is set before them. They are people too big to squabble over trivialities. They are people who know how to fit themselves into the thinking of the group.
