PICKERING SELECTED AS THE
1997 OUTSTANDING BUSINESS TEACHER

Mrs.
Pickering accepted the 1997 R. B. Russell/G. K. Walters award at the
summer meeting of Alpha Delta Chapter of Delta Pi Epsilon, a graduate
honor society in business education in the School of Business at Emporia
State University. The award is presented to a high school or community
college business teacher.
Currently, Margaret is a part-time faculty member for Butler County
Community College Business and Industry Institute in Augusta, Kansas,
where she teaches contract computer courses and computer classes offered
at the Business and Industry site. She is also ABE/GED Coordinator for
Butler County Community College in Marion, Kansas. In addition, she
is adjunct faculty member for Butler County Community College in Marion,
Kansas. Prior to her Butler County
Community College experience, she was an assistant professor of business
education at Tabor College in Hillsboro, Kansas, and business teacher
at Hillsboro High School in Hillsboro, Kansas.
Margaret received a bachelor of science degree in business education
and a masters in business education degree from Emporia State University.
Her record of professional development attendance in courses, workshops,
in-service activities is commendable. Her professional memberships include
the National Business Education Association, Kansas Business Education
Association, Delta Pi
Epsilon (Alpha Delta Chapter, Emporia), Kansas Adult Education Association.
Prior to this award, Margaret was nominated by the Marion Chamber of
Commerce to be a recipient of the Outstanding Young Woman of America
Award.
Margaret is heavily involved in professional, school, and community
activities which presently include: Vice President, Marion City Library
Board; Recording Secretary, P.E.O. Chapter DB; Elder, Marion Presbyterian
Church; Secretary, Presbyterian Women; Leader, Cadette Girl Scout Troop;
Member, 20th Century Club. Her past involvement is also commendable:
President and Corresponding
Secretary, Alpha Delta Chapter, Delta Pi Epsilon; President, Vice President,
and Treasurer of the Kansas Business Education Association; Former PRIDE
Chair for Marion, Kansas. She authored an article for The Kansas Business
Teacher regarding an experience-based learning course where she coordinated
a program
between Tabor College and Kelly Temporary Services in Wichita.
One of Margaret's colleagues wrote that she is highly respected as a
business professional and that "I value her opinion before making changes
in my business curriculum." Margaret is detail-oriented and is a caring
person. She values family, church, and professional involvement. "I
value her friendship."
Another colleague said Margaret is a true business professional and
an asset to the teaching profession. When Margaret left and returned
from Texas a couple of years ago, it didn't take long for Margaret to
get involved again. As a long-time friend and professional colleague,
we have learned many new things together and have enjoyed the fellowship
of other teachers with some fun sprinkled in. Her many student teachers
have witnessed her innovative, creative dynamics in the classroom, which
have motivated her students with an appetite for the joys of learning.
Margaret is a professional who performs her duties with the utmost efficiency
and ability.
Margaret is truly an outstanding business teacher with unique talents
and is worthy of the 1997 R.B. Russell/G. K. Walters award as Outstanding
Kansas Business Teacher.
