DELTA PI EPSILON

Some History of Alpha Delta Chapter
Compiled in 1998 by Dr. George Walters

Father of Business Education: Frederick Nichols. He started teaching business subject in 1899.  For 22 years, he taught in high schools and colleges. In 1922, until 1944, he was Professor of Business Education, Graduate School of Education, Harvard.

As graduate business education flourished in the 1920's and 30's with Nichols at Harvard, and people like Paul Lomas, H.G. Enterline, and Herbert Tonne at New York University and elsewhere, the time was ripe for a graduate honor society. Pi Omega Pi, the undergraduate honor society in business education, was already well established.

DELTA PI EPSILON was founded in 1936 at New York University by Paul Lomax.  The first annual Research Award was givenjust 5 years later in 1941. The DPE RESEARCH FOUNDATION was established in 1977, and one of their first goals was to publish the Memoirs of Frederick Nichols, which was entitled EARLY VIEWS OF BUSINESS EDUCATION, and published in 1979. There have been only five Executive Secretaries of DPE since its founding. Ellis Jones had the longest tenure as executive secretary with 21 years. The current National Executive Secretary is Robert Mitchell. Current National President, Dr. Peter Meggison.

The members have supported the chapter and the School of Business by attending and planning meetings, doing research, attending and presenting at the School of Business, Business Teacher Conferences, accepting student teachers, and the list could go on. Congratulations to Alpha Delta for and outstanding 40 years.
