Comparison Shopping

1.       Present case problem:  Jeff needs a gallon of milk.  He lives one block from a convenience store that sells milk for $1.98 a quart.  The milk at the convenience store will expire in two days.  Jeff lives three miles from a grocery store that sells milk for $2.50 a gallon.  The milk will expire in one week.  The owners of the grocery store are very involved in the community and donate a portion of their sales to area schools.  Jeff lives 10 miles from a Wal-Mart that sells milk for $1.55 a gallon.  The milk expires in one week.

2.       Have students create a decision grid that will help them determine the product that will best meet their needs as consumers.  This activity will help the students identify factors to consider when shopping for products or services.  Each product should be ranked on a scale of 1-10.  Price, quality, and quantity are among the categories that should be included in the grid.

Ethics

1.       Have students go to a company website and find out if there is anything in their mission statement or company philosophy concerning ethics.

2.       Students should report what they find and discuss whether they believe the company is ethical.

Making Change

1.       Have students go to http://www.funbrain.com/cashreg/index.html and click on the U.S. flag and select the hard option.  When finished with the activity, have the students print their scores.

Insurance

1.       Explain the importance of having an inventory of your personal items on file when filing claims with insurance companies then have the students create an inventory of their personal items.

2.       Have students go to http://insurance.yahoo.com/auto.html and insert their own information in the auto coverage analyzer and print the results.  Next, have the students use the same site to enter the information of one of their parents and print the results. Students should compare and contrast the two results.
