In 1895, four young women at the University of Arkansas came together for a singular common purpose -- to form an organization which would value the talents of women and encourage them in realizing their greatest potential. Based upon these principles, Chi Omega Fraternity grew strong and achieved national status within its first decade. Today, over one hundred years later, Chi Omega has grown into the largest women's fraternity in the world with 173 collegiate chapters and with over 250,000 young women initiated into our sisterhood since our beginning. The Nu Zeta chapter of Chi Omega was founded at Emporia State University on April 8, 1961. For nearly 45 years the Chi Omega's have thrived by basing their everyday lives on six main purposes: sisterhood, scholarship, community service, career and personal development, social and campus activities. The Nu Zeta chapter of Chi Omega currently has women who are involved in a variety of campus activities including Varsity Softball, ESU Stingers, ESU Cheer Squad, Associated Student Government, Ambassadors, Order of Omega and Union Activities Council. They dedicate their time to such worthy philanthropic organizations as Big Brothers/Big Sisters and the American Cancer Society. The Chi Omega's enjoy many traditional social occasions such as Pledge Informal, Christmas Formal, Senior Informal, and Eleusinia Spring Formal. The women of Chi Omega also take part in many social events including exchanges with other fraternities and sororities, Mom's Day, Dad's Day as well as Sibling's and Friends Day. Throughout their many activities and achievements, the Chi Omega's live by the words of their Symphony written by Ethel Switzer Howard in 1909: "to live constantly above snobbery of word or deed; to place scholarship before social obligations and character before appearances; to be, in the best sense, democratic rather than "exclusive," and lovable rather than "popular"; to speak kindly, to act sincerely, to choose thoughtfully that course which occasion and conscience demand; to be womanly always; to be discouraged never; in a word, to be loyal under any and all circumstances to our Fraternity and her highest teachings and to have her welfare ever at heart that she may be a symphony of high purpose and helpfulness in which there is no discordant note." |
