A legacy is the mark you leave in an organization or the difference you make in the life of another. Fraternities and sororities have become the distinguished organizations they are today because of the legacies left by the men and women who founded them. When you join a fraternity or sorority, you become a part of something special, a part of something bigger than yourself. You become a part of its history, and you are given the opportunity to leave your own mark, to make your own difference - to leave your own legacy.
Leadership experts James Kouzes and Barry Posner state that “the legacy you leave is the life you lead.” Lead a life of excellence and get the most out of your college experience by joining the ranks of ESU’s finest leaders. Become a fraternity man or sorority woman and find out for yourself how rewarding it is to be an ESU Greek.

Welcome from the Greek Advisor
Dear Hornet,
Getting involved on campus is one of the most important things you can do while you are studying at Emporia State. Students who get involved in student organizations generally have a better overall college experience and are more likely to graduate.
One of the best ways to get involved is to join a fraternity or sorority. Greek-letter organizations provide you with opportunities for immense personal, professional, and leadership development. More importantly, the bonds of friendship formed through fraternal organizations will continue on in life beyond college. Our Greek-letter organizations are committed to principles of scholarship, leadership, service, and brotherhood/sisterhood.
Some of you may be wondering if Greek life is really like "Animal House," "Old School," or the new show "Greek" on ABC Family. Those media portrayals are largely based on stereotypes that are not representative of Greek life at Emporia State. We take a strong position against hazing and have groups such as GAMMA that promote safe and responsible decision-making. The fraternities and sororities here feel strongly that the best way to develop true friendship is through mutual trust, respect, and most importantly, exemplifying their organizations' values.
I encourage you to consider joining a fraternity or sorority. The process for joining is a little different for each chapter, so browse the Greek Life web pages here to learn more about our chapters and their governing councils. If you have any questions about fraternity or sorority life, please feel free to e-mail me at jbosch1@emporia.edu or give me a call at (620) 341-5481. You may call or stop by to set up an appointment with me if you would like to meet in person. My office is located in the Center for Student Involvement on the first floor of the Memorial Union.
I wish you the best in your academic studies and hope you will consider joining the ranks of Emporia State's finest leaders.
Sincerely,
Jason Bosch
Assistant Director of Student Involvement for Greek Life

Greek Life Position on Hazing
Fraternal organizations were founded on principles of friendship, scholarship, and service. Fraternities and sororities exist to cultivate a higher order of friendship – brotherhood and sisterhood – based on mutual trust, respect, and personal integrity. When you are initiated into a fraternity or sorority, you take an oath to live up to the values espoused by your organization. These values are at the core of who we are as fraternity men and sorority women. When we fail to live our organizations' VALUES, we lose the VALUE of our organizations. Hazing deters us from our true purpose. It does not foster true friendship, trust or respect, and in no way does it enhance the fraternal experience.
Hazing is illegal and unethical. Fraternity and sorority chapters are held to a high standard of leadership and scholarship, whose members are expected to conduct themselves in a manner consistent with the missions, values, and policies of both Emporia State University and the local and/or (inter)national organization. Therefore, actions or behaviors of any fraternity or sorority member that are not in alignment with these missions, values and policies will be taken seriously and will be addressed in an educational manner consistent with ESU policies.
