Graduate Assistant Application
Center for Student Involvement Staff:
The CSI staff consists of five full-time professional staff and one full-time administrative assistant; four graduate assistants, and undergraduate employees. As a member of this team of professionals, graduate assistants will work in a creative and collaborative environment to further our mission.
Mission
As members of a collaborative team of Student Affairs professionals from Residential Life and the Center for Student Involvement, we facilitate opportunities for students to learn academic, cultural, social and civic responsibility within their personal and professional lives. By fostering identity exploration and ethical development, we empower students to become critical reflective thinkers and productive citizens.
Primary Emphasis:
The primary emphasis of graduate assistantships in the Center for Student Involvement is in student development and administration in higher education. Graduate assistants will gain experience in various elements of the student services profession. The experiences gained are designed to develop skills and competencies critical to success when pursuing a career in fields focusing on social, cognitive, and behavioral processes. Graduate assistants must have a sincere desire to assist students in developing self-understanding, independence, responsibility, interpersonal skills, and organizational leadership skills.
Salary, Appointment & Benefits:
- 10 month position
- $7000 stipend/academic year

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution
- Acceptance into a graduate program at Emporia State University
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel, and Power Point
- Sincere desire to assist students develop the academic, social, personal, professional and leadership skills necessary to be a successful and productive citizen
Preferred Qualifications:
- Extensive student organization involvement as an undergraduate
- Interest in pursuing a career in the helping professions
- Strong communication, interpersonal and leadership skills
- Commitment to teamwork and collaboration

GREEK LIFE ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Educator
- Assist in planning/coordinating training and development programs on topics such as leadership, risk management, marketing, diversity, officer transition, etc.
- Gain a general understanding of student development and organizational development theories and apply them in working with fraternity/sorority chapters.
Values Aligner
- Challenge fraternity sorority members to make values-based decisions.
- Set and communicate high expectations of ethical conduct.
- Engage in meaningful discussions about leading with integrity.
- Gain an understanding of the guiding values/principles of our fraternity and sorority chapters and challenge members to live these values/principles in their daily lives.
Collaborator
- Develop relationships with key constituents and stakeholders, including faculty and staff, administrators, faculty/chapter advisors, chapter alumni/alumnae and fraternity/sorority headquarters staff.
- Work with other departments on campus to provide programs and services to benefit chapters and facilitate their growth and development.
Advisor
- Assist in advising the Interfraternity Council (IFC), Panhellenic Association (PHA), Order of Omega and Greeks Advocating the Mature Management of Alcohol (GAMMA).
- Attend weekly/bi-weekly meetings of the organizations listed above.
- Meet one-on-one with fraternity and sorority members to provide guidance, assistance, resources and support.
Administrator
- Assist in maintaining extensive records on programs, membership statistics, scholarship rankings, business conducted by IFC/PHA, etc.
- Develop a working knowledge of ESU, IFC, PHA, chapter and (inter)national policies.
- Assist in conducting surveys and other research projects including needs assessment, program evaluation/effectiveness, etc.
- Participate in professional organizations and related conferences.
- Assist in goal setting, strategic planning and marketing of Greek Life.
LEADERSHIP EDUCATION & DEVELOPMENT ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Advise students in Associated Student Government in conjunction with full-time staff
EOF Committee-Provide training and guidance
Work closely with Fiscal affairs (line items and Allocations)
Committee Meetings (4 weekly)
Enforce policies and procedures
Train students in Parliamentary Procedure
Advise Sigma Alpha Pi, Society of Leadership and Success in conjunction with full-time staff
Facilitate Training Days (3 hour retreats)
Oversee the Success Network Teams including SNT reports (25 teams)
Promote 8 National Leadership Speakers throughout the year
Assist in training officer team
Help coordinate programming for second year members
Work with SWARM Leaders
Promote SWARM Leader positions
Interview and select members
Coordinate with Admissions
Teach CW280 (3 credit hour) Paraprofessional in Student Recruitment
Work with Recognized Student Organizations
Coordinate official communications to RSOs
Help facilitate the Jumpstart Retreat
Facilitate RSO workshops throughout year
Assist with Leadership Education And Development Department
Help plan and facilitate LEAD Awards Night
Coordinate LEAD Emporia Program
Assist with the training for students who serve on campus wide committees
Work in conjunction with professional staff to provide leadership development to academic and student affairs areas of the university
Coordinate special programs as needed
Assist with development and implementation of research projects
MULTICULTURAL AFFAIRS ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

The Mulitcultural Affairs Office will be hiring two graduate students. List below is the employment descriptions for each GA.
Graduate Assistant for Multicultural Student Organizations
- Assist the Director of Multicultural Affairs with planning and implementing a Leadership fall retreat for the Multicultural Student Organizations
- Provide the direction with planning and facilitating a monthly meeting entitled, Vice President’s Council on Multicultural Leadership, with the officers of the Multicultural Student Organizations that pertain to issues related to program planning, time management, conflict resolution, organizational development, fundraising, and membership empowerment
- Work closing with the EDGE Graduate Assistant to encourage the multicultural student organizations to be involved with EDGE Academic programs
- Assist with program development and implementation, including the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration and the Minority Graduation Celebration.
- Facilitate co-sponsored activities between Multicultural Affairs Office and its RSOs and other areas of campus and community
- Assist with facilitating diversity awareness training seminars/programs to include assisting with designing a multicultural resource library with the EDGE Graduate Assistant
This GA position requires maturity and the ability to make decisions without concern for peer popularity and/or peer pressure repercussions.
Graduate Assistant for the Multicultural Affairs EDGE Tutoring and Mentoring Program
---Assist with planning and facilitating the EDGE Overnight Summer Orientation Program.
---Provide leadership on marketing the EDGE Program to involve coordinating with the Admissions Office and Director of Multicultural Director to enlist the participation of prospective students into the program. This will also include working with the HACE (Hispanic/Latino Achievement Commitment to Excellence) committee to identify strategies for incorporating the EDGE Program into initiatives to create college awareness with middle and high school students.
---Presenting information on the EDGE program to prospective EDGE participants and take the leadership with outreach efforts to the local school districts professionals, parents, and teachers.
---Assist Multicultural Director with planning and implementing Academic Sessions for EDGE participants
---Serve as an on campus liaison to academic departments and office on the needs of EDGE students to include working with the Multicultural Director with the early intervention alert system.
---Work with the Director of Multicultural Affairs with developing and facilitating training for EGDE academic peer mentors.
---Plan and organize EDGE workshops on scholarship application development, career exploration, and preparing for graduate school
---Advise students on the EDGE Program requirements and enroll students in the EDGE Program.
---Take the leadership with designing a multicultural resource library with the EDGE Graduate Assistant
