School Counseling(Master Degree Program) Steps towards a five-year professional school specialist license for school counselor in Kansas.
Instructions: After reading the following please sign below and return to the CERP Office. The Kansas State Department of Education’s requirements for obtaining a professional license as a SCHOOL COUNSELOR in Kansas. Step # 1: (Eligibility) You must hold a valid five-year professional teaching license (or five-year teaching certificate) to be eligible for a school counselor license. Step # 2: You must complete an approved graduate degree school counselor program to qualify for a school specialist license.
Step # 3: You must complete the PRAXIS II exam administered through the Educational Testing Service (Test number 0420: School Guidance and Counseling) and achieve a score of 600 or above to qualify for the license. Step # 4: Once you accept a position as a school counselor you should then apply for and receive a conditional school specialist license for SCHOOL COUNSELOR (contact www.ksde.org). Step # 5: You should then complete a performance assessment (KSDE Standard # 11) as part of a supervised post-degree internship. This supervised experience (CE891 & CE982) is completed during your first year of employment as a school counselor under your conditional license. COURSE DESCRIPTION: (Prerequisites: degree completion; complete a post internship application the semester before enrolling; permission from program coordinator, and successful completion of CE881). The purpose of this course is to fulfill the requirements for meeting the Kansas State Department of Education Standard # 11: The school counselor must complete an internship supervised by the recommending institution as part of the performance assessment for this license. The candidate must enroll in 2-3 hours a semester during the first year under conditional license as a full-time employee. If the employee is working only half time, the internship can be spread over two years. A mentor should be provided by the employing district from the same endorsement field and under conditions described in 91-41-1 through 91-41-4. The university must supply a supervisor who makes a minimum of two visits per semester with additional communication between visits. The university will then make the recommendation for licensure after the internship has been completed successfully. Step # 6: You should apply for and receive a five-year professional school specialist license for SCHOOL COUNSELOR.
