School Counseling(Master Degree Program) The School Counseling Program is regionally accredited by the North Central Association. In addition, it is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education and the Kansas State Department of Education, and was accredited by the Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) in 1997. To become eligible for licensure as a school counselor (preK-12) in Kansas, candidates must complete a masters degree in school counseling and have a five-year standard teaching certificate or a professional teaching license. Similar to all special licensing disciplines, candidates applying after September 1, 2003 must complete a PRAXIS Examination. Candidates applying after September 1, 2004 will receive a conditional license and be subject to successful completion of an internship. The intership satisfies the professional assessment necessary to qualify the candidate for a professional School Counselor License. Although Kansas school counselor licensure is reciprocal with most states, it is recommended that prospective students and candidates check on specific requirements for the state in which they plan to work. * Steps towards a five-year professional school specialist license for school counselor in Kansas. Graduate assistantships and a variety of other forms of financial aid are available each year for students majoring in school counseling. In addition, scholarships for school counseling majors usually are available through the department each semester.
