Rehabilitation Counseling Program

(Masters Degree Program)

Program Requirements
In addition to the requirements for all graduate majors in the department, students are permitted to enroll in  graduate course work but are not formally admitted to Degree Candidacy in the rehabilitation counseling program until they have completed nine hours of course work as approved by their academic advisors. To be admitted applicants must have a 3.0 GPA (4.0 scale) on their undergraduate work or have obtained at least 40 on the Miller Analogies Test or 850 on the GRE.

After completing all required materials for admission to the Rehabilitation Counseling Program and receiving a letter stating that the student may enroll in courses leading toward the M.S. degree in rehabilitation counseling, each student should follow the steps previously listed for all department majors and the following additional steps:

  1. Obtain a Student Manual for the Rehabilitation Counseling Program
  2. After successful completion of 6-9 graduate hours, file an Application for Degree Candidacy. (Forms are available from the Department office.) To apply for degree candidacy the student shall have a "B" or higher graduate grade point average and the student shall have no grade lower than "B" in CE 810, CE 815, CE 820, and CE 825 and all core (required) rehabilitation courses (the core does not include ER 752 or ER 851).

    Degree Candidacy
Candidacy is the formal approval for pursuit of a graduate degree after it is determined that all specified preliminary requirements have been met. The following are required to be accepted for degree candidacy in rehabilitation counseling:

  1. Complete the Graduate Essay Examination
  2. With your advisor develop a degree plan and submit to the Department office
  3. The student must have completed at least six hours of course work on the graduate program of study at ESU before being admitted to degree candidacy. These six hours must include two of the following courses: RE 801, RE 695, RE 830, RE 833, RE 832, CE 825, or CE 810.
  4. Any "probationary" status must have been removed before or at the time of admission to degree candidacy.
  5. The student shall have a "B" or higher graduate grade point average and the student shall have no grade lower than "B" in CE 810, CE 815, CE 820, and CE 825 and all core (required) rehabilitation courses (the "core" does not include ER 752 or ER 851).

Comprehensives
Unless a student is completing a thesis, all majors in rehabilitation counseling are required to pass a comprehensive examination covering the academic work of this degree program. Students must sign up in the Department office at least two weeks prior to the scheduled examination. Students must take comprehensives during their last semester of course work or enrollment in the program.

Course Substitution Option

Students admitted to the Department may have previous academic or work experience that might support a request for change(s) in the 60 graduate credit-hour requirement for the program. If a student believes he/she may qualify for a modification of requirements, they may obtain the Request Form from the Rehabilitation Program Directors. Any curriculum change is reviewed by the full-time faculty teaching in the rehabilitation counseling program.

Students who graduate from the undergraduate degree program in Rehabilitation Services Education from ESU may follow a modified program requiring a minimum of 48 graduate semester credit-hours. The program is reduced from 60 hours since 2 courses required for this program are taken in the undergraduate program. They include RE 640-2 and RE 695-3. In all cases the student must have obtained a minimum of a "B" grade in each of these classes to follow the modified program. Any questions about the option of substitution or waiving courses should be directed to the Rehabilitation Program Directors. It should be noted that students who follow the 48 hour degree program WILL NOT MEET the professional counselor licensure requirements in Kansas.
