Introduction

The communication internship at Emporia State University is a structured educational experience that applies classroom learning in a productive work environment consistent with the student's planned academic or career goals. The description of the Field Communication Internship applies to Field Internship I (SP474/475) and Field Internship II (SP574/575) and does not apply to Academic Internship I (SP473) or Communication Internship I & II (SP 570 or SP 571).

An internship is a planned work experience for which academic credit is granted. Supervision consists of a site supervisor (a qualified professional at the intern site) and a faculty advisor (a member of the ESU Communication Department faculty). The site supervisor evaluates the work done on the job. The faculty advisor, in consultation with the site supervisor and the student, is responsible for maintenance of academic quality and assigns a final course grade.

Internships differ from volunteerism or simple work-for-pay, such as after-class or summer jobs. The college encourages a corporation, firm or agency to pay an intern since interns are “professionals” in training and should be assigned a variety of duties similar to those given to entry-level professional employees.

Students with a Public Relations Concentration

An intern's duties and responsibilities may include any or all of the following:

•  Preparing news releases and other basic communication tools

•  Writing, editing and laying out a newsletter

•  Developing, designing and writing copy for brochures

•  Library or online research

•  Preparing advertising copy

•  Planning and implementing special events/special projects

•  Developing/maintaining media or constituency contacts

•  Designing and maintaining Websites

•  Assisting with media relations (interview set up, pitching stories, coordinating news conferences, developing media kits, updating media lists, obtaining and filing clippings, etc.)

•  Planning exhibits

•  Writing copy and producing videotapes or video public service announcements (PSAs)

•  Organizing or participating in a speaker's bureau

•  Conducting or assisting with public opinion or market research

•  Participating in client and department/company meetings

•  Participating in communication planning/brainstorming sessions

•  Coordinating pro bono accounts

•  Coordinating volunteer efforts

•  Other assigned duties

A student with a Public Communication Concentration or a Career and Professional Communication Concentration should discuss possible duties and responsibilities with his or her advisor.

Some internships are paid, others are unpaid. An intern may receive both credit and pay if the latter is available at the site.

A student that meets the eligibility requirements for an internship in the Communication Department should contact his/her faculty advisor and register for SP474/475 Field Internship I, or SP 574/575, Field Internship II. The field internship may be taken for one, two, or three hours of academic credit and can be taken with a letter grade option (SP 474 or 574) or a pass/no credit option (SP475 or 575).
