Teaching
CH 500: Chemical Safety and Hazardous Waste Management
Course Description
This course provides an introduction to modern principles and practices of laboratory safety, chemical inventory organization, and hazardous waste management. It is designed for in-service teachers of science. Safety measures required for sensible conduct in a laboratory setting are discussed. In addition, preventive measures and appropriate corrective actions for various laboratory scale accidents are considered. Particular emphasis is placed on compliance with OSHA , EPA, and KDHE regulations related to chemical safety and hazardous waste management. The in-service teachers enrolled in this course will attend a mandatory day-long presentation to be held at the campus of Emporia State University on June 7. Then, students must travel to one of two onsite workshops to be conducted on June 14 and June 28 at high school venues volunteered by enrollees. Using the information and skills obtained at the presentation and workshop, students will then develop safety and management plans for their school laboratories and chemical inventories.
