In addition to agriculture, Steele also recorded scenes of town life on the Great Plains, as in this photograph of people in Ashland waiting for a parade to pass by.

Although few have survived, Steele must have made thousands of studio portraits because he had studios in at least a dozen and a half towns in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska. This baby picture is of Hattie Marie Bobbitt of Haskell County.
