We welcome your interest in our programs at Emporia State University.  The department is one of six departments in The Teachers College. The department of Counselor Education houses four graduate programs - Art Therapy Counseling, Clinical Counseling, Rehabilitation Counseling, School Counseling, and one undergraduate program - Rehabilitation Services Education.  The department shares Emporia State University's vision to provide leadership in quality instruction, related scholarship and service in a student-centered environment. We strive to encourage academic excellence through all of our programs in the department.

Mission Statement

The Department of Counselor Education at Emporia State University is committed to excellence in the preparation and continuing development of professionals in the counseling field. The Department provides graduate students with the knowledge, skills, and dispositions critical for effective counseling, advocacy, and leadership in addressing the diverse demands of the counseling profession.  Specifically, the Department prepares counselors with the specialized knowledge and skills required for placement in Art Therapy, Mental Health, Rehabilitation, and School Counseling settings.

Consistent with this mission are the goals of graduating students who have:

  • Knowledge of basic counseling theory and practice
  • Competencies in essential counseling services
  • Skills necessary to evaluate relevant research
  • Personal commitment to evaluating their counseling interventions
  • An ongoing effort to evolve through professional development activities
