CAMPUS INTERVIEWS
WITH CAREER SERVICES
Each year thousands of graduating students
throughout the United States begin the process of searching
for full-time career opportunities. The search involves
responding to job announcements, following up on suggestions
and leads, and participating in campus interviews. The
campus interviews at Emporia State offer many opportunities
to ESU's graduating students. Although most campus interviews
are only 30 minutes in length, they provide a chance for
the students to meet employers, to give and receive valuable
information, to create the opportunity for a second, more
extended interview and to open the door for job offers.
The key to success in a campus interview
is thorough preparation; therefore, Career Services offers
the following suggestions to those beginning the interview
process.
- Students who have registered with Career Services and
have completed their Hire-A-Hornet profile/resume
may
sign up online for an interview date/time. After
online sign ups end, interview appointments
are available on a first come, first served
basis for candidates who are not registered
with Career Services.
- Plan to interview with every company in which you have
an interest, remembering that most employers will visit
the campus only one time each year.
- Read the interview articles in Job Choices...A guide
to the job search for new college graduates. Pick up free
information in Career Services.
- Research the employer. Study the company literature on
file in Career Services and visit the employer's website.
- Identify three or four of your best qualifications that
you want to be certain to tell the employer during the
interview.
- Prepare three or four questions you would like to ask
the employer. Remember that interviewing is a two-way street!
- Formulate answers for some of the most common interview
questions you're likely to encounter.
- Bring a copy of your resume to each interview. If you
are being interviewed by more than one person, bring enough
copies so that each interviewer will have one.
- Take a few notes on the content of the interview for
future reference and use.
- At the conclusion of the interview, be certain you know
what steps the employer plans to take next and ask the
interviewer for a business card.
- Immediately after each interview, send the interviewer
a brief typewritten thank-you letter expressing your appreciation
for the opportunity to meet with her/him and restating
your qualifications for the job.
- Keep a written log of all of your employer contacts including
items such as employer name, address, telephone number
and contact person/job title as well as the date of each
contact by letter, telephone call or interview. It is also
important to note the action that is required or that will
follow from each contact. Be sure to follow up with the
employer as needed.
