"Sliding Toward Inquiry:
Using the Essential Features of Inquiry to Improve Learning in the Laboratory Environment"

About the Speaker
After a high school teacher told her that girls couldn’t “do chemistry,” MaryKay Orgill entered Brigham Young University as a chemistry major (B.S. 1995). She was surprised to find that she actually liked chemistry—and loved teaching it; so she enrolled in a graduate program at Purdue University to study both biochemistry (M.S. 1999) and chemical education (Ph.D. 2003).

As a first-year faculty member with a joint appointment in biochemistry and science education at the University of Missouri-Columbia, she took on the extra challenge of teaching a high school chemistry class. In 2004, she moved to UNLV, where her research focuses on using qualitative methods to examine students’ understandings of chemistry and biochemistry concepts. Dr. Orgill is now an Associate Professor of Chemistry at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (USA).

She has delivered professional development courses designed to increase the science and mathematics content knowledge of local elementary and secondary teachers. She is also involved with faculty professional development as the principal investigator of the Advancing Chemistry by Enhancing Learning in the Laboratory (ACELL) project.

About the Subject
In recent years, there has been a repeated call for science instructors to improve learning in the laboratory environment by modifying laboratory activities to make them less “cookbook” and more inquiry-oriented. But what does that mean? What is “inquiry?” What does it look like in a laboratory learning environment, and what can an instructor do to make a laboratory activity more inquiry-oriented? In this interactive lecture, we will discuss four historical laboratory instructional styles, their relationships to inquiry, variations of inquiry, and how instructors can use the “Five Essential Features of Inquiry” to make their laboratory activities more inquiry-oriented.

Posted under: Diversity/Cultural, Educational

FHTC Community Connections is partnering with ESU Community Hornets to offer a unique learning opportunity to ESU and FHTC students. The Global Sustainability Village is a two day class/workshop that transforms students’ thinking, as they step into the roles of subsistence farmers from other nations. Shepherd’s Valley Farm in Americus will serve as the backdrop, as students work together in small groups to harvest their own food, work for resources, trade and barter. Through cooperation within these small groups, each student will walk away with a better understanding of what it means to be a subsistence farmer in a poor country. Group discussions will emphasize sustainable local food production, strengthening the local economy, and the issues facing people living below the poverty line-in the U.S. and abroad. The class is scheduled for April 19-21, beginning 6pm Friday evening and concluding at 9:30am Sunday morning.
 Instructor Glenn Fell first implemented the Global Sustainability Village class in Kansas City, where his college students walked away from this “life-changing experience” with a new outlook on the world they live in. We hope that many ESU students can have similar experiences. Glenn Fell is currently working in the ESU Math Dept. and would be happy to speak with your class or RSO to share more about this experience.

ESU Community Hornets has generously provided a $15 “scholarship” for each ESU student that attends. The full class fee is $20; the remaining $5 paid by the student will be donated to Jubilee Farms, a local non-profit lead by instructor Glenn Fell. Jubilee Farms works with small scale subsistence farmers in Africa, training them in sustainable farming practices with the ultimate goal of ending hunger in those local communities. Jubilee Farms is run by a dedicated group of volunteers, and not one penny of donations is taken out for administrative costs.

For those not familiar with Community Connections, we provide non-credit personal and professional development opportunities through Flint Hills Technical Colleges, and are looking forward to promoting this brand new learning experience.
If you are interested in being a part of this brand-new learning experience, please contact Jessica at 341-1392 or email jehopkins@fhtc.edu today!

Walk MS connects people living with MS and those who care about them. It is a day to come together, to celebrate the progress we’ve made and to show the power of our connections. This is an annual event in Emporia geared to raise awareness and money for research, programs and services for people affected by Multiple Sclerosis.

8 volunteers are needed to run our registration table to get walkers checked in as they arrive at the walk. It would be wonderful if these same volunteers could help set up the event. We are asking for volunteers to arrive at 9:00 a.m. to help set up. Volunteers will receive t-shirts and a pizza lunch. We should be wrapped up by 1:00 p.m.

We will provide a phone training and information manual before the event. Volunteers are encouraged to dress casually and comfortably. We will provide volunteer t-shirts upon arrival.

For more information contact Jackie Feeney at 816-912-0571 or jackiefeeney@nmss.org
