Quivira will be holding the launch party for the newest edition of the journal in the Phi Kappa Phi room (MU Lower 48) at 6:00 pm on Thursday, May 9th. Contributors will be invited to read some of their work from the journal. We'd love for you to come, take a break from dead-week studying, and enjoy a mellow evening supporting your fellow students. Empowering Scholars 5k

The Emporia State Empowering Scholars 5K

The Emporia State Empowering Scholars 5K race will begin in front of Kellogg Circle on the ESU campus on May 9th, 2013. The entry fee for the race is ONLY $20! All proceeds from the event will go towards Empowering ESU Scholars.
How to Register
To register fill out the online entry form or download a paper entry form Pre-registration must be received by 12:00pm, on May, 8, 2013.
Paper entries must be turned in to the Emporia State Foundation, located at 1500 Highland St.
Entries may also be mailed to: Emporia State Foundation, 1500 Highland Street, Emporia, KS 66801
On-site registrations will be accepted the day of the event. Registration will take place at Kellogg Circle from 5:30pm-6:00pm
If paying by check, please make checks payable to “ESU Foundation"
Optional "Emporia State Empowering Scholars" 5K t-shirts may be purchased. Shirts will be $10 and must be purchased by May 1 at 5:00pm. The t-shirts will be available to pick up at the check-in table the day of the race. If you are unable to pick up your shirt at that time, you may pick it up some time after the event at the ESU Foundation.
Awards and Scholarships
We will be giving out medals to the top 3 men and women finishers in each of the 5K running divisions. We will also be giving a medal to the top 3 walkers to finish the 2 mile walk.
Also, in memory of a longtime Emporia State employee, and avid runner, the family of John Blaufuss will be in attendance on May 9, to aware 5 lucky students a $100 scholarship.
The divisions are:
 25 & under

| 26 - 39|| 26 - 39|
| 40+|| 40+|
The John Blaufuss Memorial Scholarships will be given as follows:
$100 to the first-place male who has declared eligibility
$100 to the first-place female who has declared eligibility
$100 to three eligible event attendees via a chance drawing
The race will start at 6:00pm. The start line for both courses will be located in front of the William Allen White Library, and finish in front of Plumb Hall. Both courses will wind through the ESU campus. Below are downloadable course maps that you can view or print.
Day of Race
Check-in will open at 5:30pm, in kellogg circle the day of the race. All invidiuals must check-in and sign a participant waiver before they begin the race.
Rules & Safety
The following rules and guidelines are intended to help create a fun and safe event for all participants.
- Participants must abide by all instructions given from the race staff and volunteers.
- Participants understand and acknowledge the Emporia State Empowering Scholars 5K can be a physically exhausting event and accept all risks associated with the event.
- Participants must be physically able to complete the course.
- Participants assume all responsibility for all medical expenses incurred as a result of training and/or participating in the Emporia State Empowering Scholars 5K, including but not limited to
hospitalization, ambulance transportation or physician services.
- We highly recommend participants wear running shoes.
- Participants should dress appropriately.

2013 Social Sciences Student Awards Ceremony recognizing outstanding students in the disciplines of Geography, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Social Sciences, and Social Sciences Education. Recognition will also be given to new members in the Phi Alpha Theta and Pi Gamma Mu National Honors Societies for History and Social Sciences. A reception will be held in the Fourth Floor Rotunda following the ceremony. Everyone is invited to attend and congratulate our outstanding students.

There will be performances by ESU students, the CRU worship band, and bands from out of town like Sweet Ascent. No matter what your taste in music is i am sure you will find something that suits you at this event. Take a break from studying and come join us!
