We want to join in Emporia State University's 150th Anniversary celebration! Join us as we give glory to God for the last 150 years of ESU and talk about what he might be doing for the next 150 years in the lives of many students and faculty members.

Psalm 150 is about praising God wherever you are, with everything you have. It beckons us, "Let everything that has breath praise the LORD!" How fitting for us to do so on the campus we love. We hope and pray that the night is God-honoring and Christ-centered as we worship the almighty God from whom all blessings flow.

Come join us for this night of Worship on May 1st at 7pm in Memorial Union's Colonial Ballroom.

La Diner

ESU Theatre presents La Diner, an original rock and roll

Posted under: Art, Dance, Diversity/Cultural, Music, Theatre

ESU Theatre presents La Diner, an original rock and roll “dansical”

La Diner is an original jukebox dance musical set in 1955. With a colorful cast of fourteen characters, each grapple with their prejudices and passions. It takes place in Gracie Locket's diner in the fictional town of Piney Hills, Texas. Located on the outskirts of Piney Hills, La Diner has the only jukebox in town. The diner provides a safe, welcoming place for everyone in a time of racial prejudice. Billboard chart toppers burn the floor including Tutti Frutti, Only You and Come On-A My House.

Director, choreographer, Lindy Bartruff, developed La Diner to feature the history, style, and music of the 1950’s. She wrote the script and created fourteen production numbers. Her challenge was to create very real and nuanced characters with the drive of a dance show.

Gracie Locket (Cara Lohkamp Senior, Wichita), a visionary, sets the wholesome tone of the show. Opening her heart to all people, her staff includes Rita Halladay (Marah Melvin, Junior, Iola) and John Stone (Jamarious Wicker, Junior, Atlanta, GA). When an exchange student, Evelia Dufour (Rachel Head, Sophomore, Emporia) moves to Piney Hills from France, Gracie is determined to help her fit in with the high school crowd. Jealous of the valuable land that La Diner sits on, and irritated by the liberal values that the diner represents, Beverly (Natalie King, Senior, Wichita) and Dale Bowers (Brandon Jensen, Sophomore, Salina) plot to take over the restaurant.

When Judith Thompson (Bridget Carter, Freshman, Olathe) makes a very big mistake, turmoil sets loose, and the diner’s existence is put to the test. The teens of Piney Hills, Mack Melvin (Junior,Iola), Jade Sparks (Senior, Arc City), Andrew Walker (Senior, Wichita) Noah Mefford (Senior,Burlington), Landon Noll (Sophomore, Winchester), and Kangwon Song (Senior, Korea) fight for the existence of their safe house.

This rock ‘n roll filled “dansical” will have you moving in your seats to some of your favorite songs by artists like Elvis Presley, Bill Haley, Little Richard, and Rosemary Clooney. Susan Mai and Doug Dion will to help bring this story to life with their costume and scenic designs. Mike Koetkemeyer (Senior, Salina) is serving as the Production Stage Manager.

La Diner will be presented on Friday, May 3rd in the Karl C. Bruder Theatre at 7:30. Admission is free of charge. All lovers of dance and musical theatre are encouraged to attend
