Admission and Graduation Requirements


School of Business


  1. GPA’s – A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.25 is required for students to be admitted to and to graduate from the School of Business. Students admitted to the School of Business in the Fall of 2008 and later must have a cumulative GPA of 2.35. Students must hav e a minimum 2.00 ESU GPA to graduate.

    All Business students that are admitted to the School of Business in the Fall 2006 through Spring 2008 must have an average GPA of 2.00 and no more than two grades of D in their Business core classes. All Business students admitted to the School of Business in the Fall 2008 or later must have an average GPA of 2.35 GPA in the Business core.

  2. All students taking upper-level (300+) business classes (prefixes: AC, BE, BU, FI, IS, MG, MK) must have been admitted to the School of Business. Admission to the School of Business requires the following:

    1. Completion of 51 hours

    2. Completion of the following courses:
      EG 101 Composition I* BC 103 Economics I
      EG 102 Composition II* IS 113 Intro to Microcomputer Appl.
      MA 110 College Algebra AC 223 Financial Accounting
      * Students must earn a grade of “C” or better in Composition I and II

    3. Completion or current enrollment in the following courses:
      *BC 104 Principles of Economics II *IS 213 Management Info Systems
      SP 101 Public Speaking  
      * Not required for Business Education Majors

  3. All business students who have not been admitted to the School of Business are classified as Pre-Business majors (BUP). The student’s major will be changed to the student’s choice when the student is admitted to the School of Business.

  4. If a student who has been admitted to the School of Business is placed on academic probation or in required withdrawal status, the student’s admission to the School of Business will be rescinded.

  5. A “transient student” is an ESU student who takes courses from another institution of higher education. Transient students must have courses taken from other institutions approved in advance on a “Prior Approval Form” for the course to transfer for School of Business credit.

  6. School of Business students are not allowed to take more than 18 credit hours during the spring or fall semester.

  7. All students receiving a BSB degree must have a minimum of 62 credit hours outside of business. For this computation, nine (9) hours of economics and six (6) hours of statistics are considered to be non-business.

  8. The minimum number of hours required for an undergraduate degree is 124. A minimum of 45 hours of upper division (300 level or above) courses are required.

  9. Students are required to take a minimum of 60 hours from a four-year school, including a minimum of 30 hours earned from ESU.

  10. Students graduating with a BSB degree must earn at least 50% of the required business credit hours from ESU.

  11. Business students may count no more than six (6) hours of non-core, upper-level business courses on two different majors. Business majors may count no more than three (3) hours of non-core, upper-level business courses on a minor/concentration which is in addition to a major. Double counting of a course is allowed on either a second major or a minor/concentration but not both.

  12. Minimum hours in residence may be met by either of the following:
    Earn 75 hrs. of resident credit (6 of which must be within the final 12 hrs.), or
    Earn 30 hrs. of the final 45 hours in residence, (6 of which must be within the final 12 hrs.)

  13. Only four physical education activity courses will count toward degree hours. A student must complete Lifetime Fitness and 1 additional PE activity course.

  14. Competency exams in Reading, Writing and Mathematics must be passed in order to graduate.

  15. Students admitted to the School of Business in the Fall of 2006 or later must receive a minimum score of 135 on the Major Field Test.

  16. Business students who are no longer advised at the Student Advising Center are advised at the Business Advising Center at Cremer Hall, Room 207. All business students should visit the Business Advising Center to add/drop classes, get pre-enrolled, and to talk to an advisor about their academic progress. No pre-enrollments or schedule changes are done online.

    Pre-enrollment for the fall semester begins in March. Spring semester pre-enrollment begins in October.

  17. Students should file an Application for Degree during the first semester of their junior year.
