School of Business - Emporia State University

A School of Quality Learning

The ESU School of Business creates quality learning opportunities for its students, both in and out of the classroom. It also strives to serve the needs of the business community at large through support of two business service centers.

Involvement

School of Business faculty members regularly invite business professionals and executives to speak to students. The school has established an "Executive in Residence-Diversity" series to bring successful minority business people into the school for a day.

The School reaches out to the community through the Small Business Development Center and the Center for Insurance Education. Funded by the School of Business, the U.S. Small Business Administration and the Kansas Department of Commerce and Housing, the SBDC helps small businesses develop business plans and provides other services.

The Center for Insurance Education bridges a gap between the Kansas educational community and its insurance industry. The center develops The Kansas Insurance Fact Book as well as the Insurance Resource Booklet, an index of national and regional materials in written and electronic form.

The School of Business also actively participates in the Exporter of the Year program of the Kansas International Trade Coordinating Council. Each year a Kansas business is selected as the "Governor's Exporter of the Year."

Professional Activities

School of Business faculty members lead state and national organizations such as the National Association for Business Teacher Education and the Mid America Association for Computers in Education. Faculty are frequent contributors to instructional and applied business journals and have won numerous national research awards.

The School of Business recognizes outstanding faculty members each year for instruction, intellectual contributions, and service.

Assessment

The School of Business demonstrates its commitment to continuous improvement through an extensive assessment program. The School solicits feedback from its many stakeholders, including students, employers, alumni, and political leaders.

Students prepare juried group projects in their capstone and cross functional courses which demonstrate their knowledge of the subject matter and ability to work together. Outgoing seniors take a major field test and complete an exit survey to evaluate their educational experience.

Every other year, the School surveys alumni to find ways to improve and update instruction, course content, and learning environment. Advisory councils, focus groups, and employer surveys ask respondents to rate the School's effectiveness in fulfilling its goals.

As a result of the assessment process, the School has made the following major enhancements:

International Exchange

In 1995, the School of Business established an alliance with the University d'Auvergne Clermont.

French students are placed in internships throughout the community and exposed to six weeks of business, culture, and language studies.

The School also encourages its American students to participate in studies abroad in coordination with the ESU Office of International Education.
