Dane Hansen purchased his father's mercantile business in his native community of Logan, Kansas, in 1909, after completing one term in a business college in St. Joseph, Missouri.  During his life, other business interests included oil operations and road and bridge construction.

Prominent in Kansas Republican politics for many years, Hansen was a close friend of President Eisenhower and served as Vice President of the Eisenhower Foundation.

Hansen was a generous philanthropist.  He was known to "give away" entire wheat crops, send youths to the University of Kansas with all expenses paid, and generously support the churches of all denominations.  He was the primary contributor for a Boy Scout wilderness camp at Kirwin Reservoir, which bears his name.
