School of Business - Emporia State University

Rural Entrepreneurship and Applied Technology (REAT) Program

A successful business/organization requires a good idea, a champion with passion, and a wide network of supporting persons and services. This program is intended to help spread this message to all in the broader community who may have such an idea, such a passion, or who may be able to support those with an idea and a passion.

The REAT program here in the Center for Business and Economic Development (CBED) of the School of Business at Emporia State University is being built, put together, piece by piece, over time, through a series of projects. The first of the three initial projects in this program, to be put in place as the foundation of the program, consists of the four phases of the REAT Project. The second is a rural tourism (agri-tourism) development project, based in east central Kansas, the Flint Hills Triangle, intended to foster and encourage entrepreneurial growth and create additional economic vitality and inertia for the entire State of Kansas, the Flint Hills Triangle Project. Since mid-2005, this effort has been led by the 22-county Flint Hills Tourism Coalition (see Projects and Newsletters (links on left) for more details) with ESU as an active partner. The third initial project is the Applied Technology Project that demonstrates a variety of partnering opportunities to apply existing technologies to new business creation processes. Partners include, but are not limited to other faculty across campus, the Flint Hills Technical College faculty and staff, and other broader community entities with similar and complentary interests.

A series of white papers have been prepared to provide background information on the REAT Program and the three Projects planned to implement the program.

In addition, for faculty and staff working on the Projects, an Articles Library has been established that contains copies of many of the articles included in the background review. These are a great starting point for your literature reiviews as research is planned.
