2005 Boy Scouts of America - Distinguished Citizen

The Boy Scouts of America recently honored Gene & Barbara Merry of Burlington, Kansas as the 2005 Distinguished Citizens at the Distinguished Citizen Dinner.

"Gene and Barbara Merry have been long time citizens of Burlington and the Great State of Kansas. The Merry's life story is a tale of two cities. Barb was born and raised in Overland Park, Kansas and was the 3rd of seven children. Gene, the 6th of seven siblings, was born and raised on the family farm in Ople, Kansas. This farm has been in Gene's family for three generations, and continues to be farmed by his older brother Darrell. Gene attended Olpe schools and went on to graduate from Emporia State University in 1976 with a Bachelor of Science in Business Degree with a Business Administration Major. Barb attended Johnson County Community College, then transferred her junior year to Emporia State University where she graduated in 1978.

While at ESU, Gene was involved in several organizations. These included serving as President of Sigma Tau Gamma Fraternity, was an honorary member of Blue Key National Honor Fraternity, a member of Xi Phi Leadership and Phi Beta Lambda. While at ESU, Barb was a member of Chi Omega Sorority."
