2006 Outstanding Alumni - Major Hamilton


U.S. Army Maj. Joey Hamilton, of Lenexa, earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting from ESU in 1995. He has served the U.S. Army as a comptroller since 2001, and as a combat engineer from 1995 to 2001, monitoring millions of dollars and supporting the war on terror. Hamilton graduated from Leavenworth High School in 1990.

Hamilton earned an MBA and master of arts in public administration from Syracuse Univ. in 2004. He was nominated for the award by Dr. John Rich. As an engineer he has had assignments at Ft. Leonard Wood, Mo.; Ft. Hood, Texas; and Ft. Riley, Kan.; in Ft. Riley he commanded Alpha Company, 70th Engineers (Combat). He deployed in support of Operation Desert Strike.

As an Army comptroller he has been assigned as a budget officer under the office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Financial Management and Comptroller stationed at the Pentagon, as a program analyst with the Third Army Headquarters in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom stationed at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, and as a budget officer for the Combined Arms Center at Ft. Leavenworth. Military decorations include the Meritorious Service Medal with oak leaf cluster, Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, and the Global War on Terror Expeditionary Medal.

Highlights of professional accomplishments include items such as "programmed, budgeted and executed $4.2 million provided for Army civilian and military training" and "served as the accountable officer for over $17 million in company tactical and administrative equipment without a single loss of accountability."
