Biological Sciences Scholars Award Program
Department of Biological Sciences
Introduction
Biology scholars awards are provided in addition to the University-wide scholarship program at Emporia State University. Each award has unique requirements for eligibility.
HUTTON SCHOLAR (one, ~$500/year*)
A recipient of the Mary and Kenneth A. Hutton Scholarship must be pursuing a biology degree in wildlife biology (B.S. with concentration in environmental biology, botany or zoology). There is no restriction on enrollment classification, and a Hutton Scholar may be a freshman, a transfer student, or an upperclassman.
AGRELIUS SCHOLAR (one, ~$700/year*)
A recipient of the Frank U. G. Agrelius Scholarship must be pursuing a biology degree in any field of biology (B.S., B.A., or B.S.E.) and should have completed 59 hours before the semester for which the scholarship would first be awarded. A junior year Agrelius Scholar may apply in competition to renew his/her scholarship for the senior year.
BREUKELMAN SCHOLARS (two, ~$1500/year each*)
Recipients of the John and Ruth Breukelman Scholarships must be pursuing a biology degree in any field of biology (B.S., B.A., or B.S.E.) and should have completed 59 hours before the fall semester for which the scholarship would be awarded. Breukelman Scholars who are juniors may apply in competition to renew their scholarship for their senior year.
SCHNITTKER-MUSICK SCHOLARS (five, ~$2500/year each*)
Recipients of the Schnittker-Musik Scholarships must be pursuing a biology degree in any field of biology (B.S., B.A., or B.S.E.) and should have completed 59 hours before the fall semester for which the scholarship would be awarded. Schnittker-Musik Scholars who are juniors may apply in competition to renew their scholarship for their senior year. Other factors being equal, preference is given to applicants who graduated from Cunningham High School and/or who graduated from rural Kansas schools.
*Exact amount of scholarship award depends on interest rates; exact amounts are designated in award letters. Awards may vary year-by-year depending on yield rates, number of scholars, and other factors.
Universal criteria for scholarships awarded from the Department of Biological Sciences:
- Resident of Kansas
- An ACT composite score of 24 or higher (and a minimum math ACT of 24)
- A high school grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 on a standard 4-point scale.
- High school coursework in biology, mathematics, and chemistry or physics or earth science consistent with a biology major.
- Contact with a faculty member in the Department of Biological Sciences so that an assessment can be made of the "match" of an award candidate's background, the prospective awardee's intended major or program of study, and the major or program requirements and expectations.
Continuing Students
To be eligible for continuation of an award, and to enable the Department of Biological Sciences to assess the continuing commitment of a student to its programs, an application form must be completed by the February deadline (pending an exceptional circumstance) for continuation of an award for a subsequent year. Criteria for continuation include the following:
- Successfully complete a minimum of twelve (12) credit hours per semester at E.S.U. [this may include an exchange semester at a foreign university with courses by prior approval],
- maintain a minimum of a 3.0 cumulative GPA, and
- continue a major, teaching field, or pre-professional program (evident from enrollment in the relevant program courses) in the Department of Biological Sciences.
