TEXT:                        Hole’s Essentials of Human Anatomy and Physiology. 8th Ed.

(2003) McGraw Hill

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

     The primary goal of this course is to enhance your understanding and interest in the function and design of the human body. The knowledge you gain from this class will help you to become more aware of, and, better understand health related items that appear frequently in newspapers, magazines, and on television. Further, this course will provide you with the basic essentials that will aid you in future courses such as Kinesiology, Exercise Physiology, and Prevention and Care of Athletic Injuries.

COURSE ORGANIZATION:

    Material will be presented primarily in the form of lectures, reading assignments from the text, and selected health related articles. Most, but not all, of the lecture material will be taken from the text used in this class.

GRADING:

     Your grade will be based upon the total points you earn on examinations and short quizzes. There is no provision for doing extra or outside work to improve your grade. In this class there will be a total of approximately 550 points.

                         Exam 1          = 100 pts

                         Exam 2          = 100 pts

                         Exam 3          = 100 pts

                         Final Exam     = 150 pts

                         Quizzes           = 100 pts (approximately)

                                                   --------------------------

APPROXIMATE TOTAL = 550 PTS

GRADING SCALE:                          A = 93.50% - 100%

                                                            A- = 89.50 - 93.49%

                                                            B+ = 87.50% - 89.49%

                                                            B = 83.50% - 86.49%

                                                            B- = 79.50% - 83.49%

                                                            C+ = 77.5 - 79.49%

                                                            C = 69.50% - 77.49%

                                                            D = 59.50% - 69.49%

                                                            F = < 59.50%

EXAMINATIONS:

     There will be three tests plus a final exam (see attached class schedule). The lecture exams will be worth 100 points each and will consist of short answer and essay questions, as well as, labeling of anatomical diagrams. The final exam will be 150 points of which 100 points will come from material covered since the last test. The other 50 points will come from material covered over the entire semester.

NO MAKE UP EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN!! If you should miss an exam for any reason, you may take a comprehensive make-up final during the Final Examination period to replace the missed exam. If more than ONE exam is missed, you will receive a ZERO for each additional missed exam. If you miss more than ONE exam, it is recommended that you withdraw from the course.

QUIZZES:

     You should expect a 10 point quiz every Wednesday at the start of class. These quizzes will be over material that was covered since the last quiz. I will drop your two lowest quiz grades. If you should miss a quiz, that will be the one of the quizzes dropped. If you should miss two quizzes, those will be the two quizzes dropped. All other missed quizzes will be recorded as zeros. These quizzes are not intended to be painful, but rather to help prepare you for the upcoming lecture exam.

ATTENDANCE:

     You or your parents have paid a substantial sum for you to obtain an education. You are now capable of making your own decisions about coming to class. It is to your benefit to come to class, and I will make it as enjoyable and interesting as I possibly can.

BEHAVIOR:

     Your attention and participation in class is expected. If you should become a disruptive influence, I reserve the right to ask for your removal from the class.

STUDENT-INITIATED WITHDRAWALS:

     It is your responsibility to get the paperwork done if you decide to withdraw from this course. The deadline for an "automatic W" is the end of the tenth week. After that date I do not have the option of awarding a "W", but must award a regular letter grade.

WHO SHOULD BE IN THIS CLASS:

     This course is designed primarily for non-biology and non-health professionals. If you are a biology, pre-nursing, pre-physical therapy, or some other pre-health professional major you should be enrolled in ZO 362 and ZO 363.

LAB SECTIONS:

     If you are enrolled in the Introduction to Human Anatomy and Physiology class (ZO 200), then you may also need to be enrolled in one of the Z0 201 laboratory sections depending upon your major. The two laboratory sections meet on either Monday or Wednesday at 12:00 p.m.

ACADEMIC DISHONESTY (CHEATING)

     Cheating will not be tolerated. If you are caught cheating, I will personally see that you meet with the Academic Vice President about your continued enrollment at Emporia State University.

Emporia State University will make reasonable accommodations for persons with documented disabilities. Students need to contact the Director of Disability Services and the professor as early in the semester as possible to ensure that classroom and academic accommodations are implemented in a timely fashion. All communication between students, the Office of Disability Services, and the professor will be strictly confidential.
