Janet Bailey, Wendy Helsel, Muhammad Nashatizadeh, and Tamara Signer were selected as Shepherd Scholars at Emporia State University.

Shannon Fann, Jennifer Mader, and Mackenzie Peterson had their term papers in genetics accepted into "The Best of Emporia State: An Anthology of Undergraduate Essays".

Melissa Suchy was accepted to particpate in the 1998 Summer Mentor Program through the University of Kansas Medical School.

Alisa Rapp was named the Dwight & Ida Curry Newberg Outstanding Senior for 1998.

Muhammad M. Nashatizadeh won first place for the best oral presentation by an undergraduate student at the annual meeting of the Kansas Academy of Science for his paper entitled "Effect of short-term simulated microgravity on the blood viscosity of tail-suspended rats (Rattus norvegicus)".

Ryan M. McKnab won first place for the best poster presentation by an undergraduate student at the annual meeting of the Kansas Academy of Science for his paper entitled "An examination of the takeoff characteristics of the great blue heron (Ardea herodias)".

Wendy Helsel (Genetics), Muhammad M. Nashatizadeh (Genetics), Alan Trites (Virology), Chris McFall (Virology), and Shalmica Williams (American Women Writers) had their papers accepted into "The Best of Emporia State: An Anthology of Undergraduate Essays".

Linda Rice was selected as a Shepherd Scholar at Emporia State University.

Sarah Tso was accepted into the Summer Marine Biology Program at the Marine Biology Institute in Port Aransas, Texas.

Graduate Students
William Jensen won the Outstanding Student Presentation Award at the annual meeting of the Kansas Ornithological Society for his paper entitled "Edge effects on three grassland bird species: a preliminary evaluation".

Chris Wilkinson was named recipient of the Otto Tiemeier-Frank Cross Award as the outstanding fisheries student in Kansas by the Kansas Chapter of the American Fisheries Society.

Angela Babbit, Angela Bulger, and Ngoni Kunonga were awarded Academic Achievement Awards from ESU for their continuing graduate studies next year.

Matthew S. Peek won second place for the best oral presentation by a master's student at the annual meeting of the Kansas Academy of Science for his paper entitled "An evaluation of three leghold traps for capturing raccoons".

Tracy L. Jones won first place for the best poster presentation by a graduate (doctoral or masters) student at the annual meeting of the Kansas Academy of Science for her paper entitled "The spiders of Howe Woods".

Matthew S. Peek had two term papers, one for Evolution and one for Conservation Biology, accepted into "The Best of Emporia State: An Anthology of Graduate Essays".

Angela Bulger, William Jensen, and Matthew Peek were initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

Lani Burress won the Howard Kay Gloyd-Edward Harrison Taylor Scholarship, which is given to the outstanding student of Kansas herpetology, by the Kansas Herpetological Society.

Linda Rice received the 1999 Freeman Tilden Scholarship presented by Region VI of the National Association for Interpretation.

Crystal Glidden, Jawad Nashatizadeh, and Justin Ramsey were accepted into the 1999 Summer Mentor Program that is administered by Kansas University School of Medicine.

Lani Burress won first place paper in the undergraduate division at the annual meeting of the Kansas Academy of Science for her paper entitled "Feeding causes thermophily in the Woodhouse's toad (Bufo woodhousii)".

Lani Burress, Jawad Nashatizadeh, Justin Ramsey, and Melissa Suchy were selected as Shepherd Scholars at Emporia State University. Daniel Dillinger was also awarded a Shepherd Scholarship but had to decline because of early admission to optometry school.

Jawad Nashatizadeh was selected to the 22nd edition of The National Dean's List.

Lani Burress and Chris McFall were initiated into Sigma Xi as Associate Members by the Emporia State University Chapter.

Melody Cox, Jasmine Heili, Tyson Heins, Jawad Nashatizadeh, Justin Ramsey, Melissa Suchy, and Jennifer Ziegler were initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

Linda Rice (Wildlife Management Policies), Michelle Dickason (Biology of Plants), and M. Jawad Nashatizadeh (English Composition I) had their papers accepted into "The Best of Emporia State: An Anthology of Undergraduate Essays".

Graduate Students
Ngoni Kunonga received the Martin Luther King, Jr. Commerative Award from ESU.

Toni Patton and Mike Synder were awarded Academic Achievement Awards from ESU for their continuing graduate studies next year.

Ngoni Kunonga received the second place paper award in the master's division at the annual meeting of the Kansas Academy of Science for his paper entitled "Characterization of the multiple antibiotic resistance operon in veterinary Salmonella isolates".

Matthew Applegate won the Julianelle Award for first place in the graduate student paper competition at the Missouri Branch of the American Society for Microbiology for his paper entitled "Detection of Listeria monocytogenes in ground turkey and turkey frankfurters using ELISA and DNAH prior to and following exposure to ultracold temperatures".

William Jensen, Frank Kuhn, Ngoni Kunonga, Ching Wen Tseng, and Jeffrey Witters were initiated into Sigma Xi as Associate Members by the Emporia State University Chapter.

Jennifer Halstead was initiated into the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi.

David Gillette and Jennifer Ziegler were awarded Academic Achievement Awards from ESU for their continuing graduate studies next year.

At the annual meeting of the Kansas Academy of Sciences, Toni Patton was given the first place award in the student paper competition at the master's student level for her paper entitled "Epidemiological typing of Serratia marcescens"; Kevin Aldrich was given the second place award in the student paper competition at the master's student level for his paper entitled "Comparative erythrocyte osmotic fragility of semi-aquatic and terrestrial ectothermic vertebrates"; and Dana Slaughter was given the third place award in the student paper competition at the master's student level for her paper entitled "Isolation of Staphylococcus aureus from Cope's gray treefrog, Hyla chrysoscelis" .
