October 21, 2009-In a heavyweight battle, #19 Truman downed #7 Emporia State 25-17, 26-24, 21-25, 25-23 in front of 1042 in White Auditorium on "Volley for the Cure" night at White Auditorium. Both teams hit below .210 on the night as there were 25 blocks and 155 digs in the four set match.
The Hornets jumped out to an early 4-1 lead in the first set only to see the Bulldogs go on a 13-4 run that included four service aces. The TSU lead would grow to 18-11 and 22-14 before ESU scored three of four to close within 23-17. TSU would get to set point on their fifth ace of the opening set and Lauren Graybeal ended the set with a kill.
ESU led 4-0 to start the second set and was ahead 21-17 before TSU ended the set with a 9-3 run.
Truman started the third set with the lead and was ahead 13-9 when ESU went on an 7-1 run led by Katelyn Kaiser's two block assists and kill for a 16-14 lead. The Bulldogs tied the score at 16, but back to back kills by Kaiser and Megan Leuger put the Hornets ahead to stay on the way to the 25-21 win.
In the fourth set neither team could manage more than a three point lead with ESU fighting off a match point at 24-22 on Caitlyn Murray's kill. TSU took the set and the match on a block by Graybeal and Megan Sharpe for their second straight win over the Hornets in White Auditorium dating back to the 2008 South Central Regional Championship match.
Arica Shepard led ESU with 16 kills and 18 digs, but was the only Hornet with double figures in kills. Amy Byfield had a team high 19 assists for ESU while Ting Liu added 38 assists, 11 digs, four block assists and four kills.
Megan Sharpe had a match high 17 kills on .517 hitting and was the only starter in the match to hit over .265 on the evening. Casey Bruno had a match high 23 digs while the setter combo of Ashley Petak and Krysta Tholen combined for 46 assists. Brianne Boner had five blocks while Katelyn Kaiser added six as ESU finished with 13 blocks on the night.
The Hornets are back in action on Friday when the travel to Missouri Western. First serve from St. Joseph, Mo. is set for 7 p.m.
