November 6, 2009-The #7 Emporia State volleyball team got a career high 25 kills from Brittney Miller in a 3-1 upset loss to #22 Pittsburg State on Friday in White Auditorium.
The Hornets got off to a strong start, scoring the first four points of the match on kills by Arica Shepard and Brittney Miller and block assists by Katelyn Kaiser and Ting Liu. ESU had set point at 24-19 when PSU went on a 6-0 run, fighting off five set points, to take a 25-24 lead. The Hornets fought off a set point of their own before the Gorillas got a kill from Pamela Cartagena and block assists from Samantha Franiuk and Brooke Fay to win the first set 27-25.
Neither team took more than a two point lead in the second set until ESU got back to back kills by Shepard and Miller to go up 20-17. The Hornets would end the set with a 5-2 run and evened the match on Caitlyn Murray's kills and a 25-20 win.
The third set saw 11 ties and four lead changes before Pitt State closed the set with three points on two ESU errors and a kill by Molly Bergkamp for the 25-22 win. The Gorillas never led by more than five points in the fourth set but never trailed. Cartagena ended the match with her 20th kill for the 25-22 win.
Shepard joined Miller in double figures for ESU with 15 kills and 24 digs. Ting Liu was close to a triple double with 58 assists, 13 digs and seven kills on .294 hitting. Amy Byfield became the ESU career leader in digs with 21 in the match, passing Cara Petri. Her 1,944 career digs moves her past Jill Quast of NWMSU for seventh on the MIAA list.
Cartagena led PSU with 20 kills and 16 digs with just one attack error. Emily Vosseler had 57 assists and Cassie Wilson dug 25 balls for the Gorillas.
With the loss ESU drops to 13-3 in the MIAA, two games behind league leading Central Missouri who is 16-2.
The Hornets will take on Missouri Southern on Saturday at 7 p.m. in White Auditorium. ESU seniors Amy Byfield, Arica Shepard and Jenna Snook will be honored prior to the match. Fans with a ticket stub from the Turnpike Tussle football game between ESU and Washburn will be admitted free to the volleyball match.

This year's Hornet team has the ESU career leader in kills (Shepard), digs (Byfield), and block assists (Brianne Boner).
