September 9, 2009 -- The #3 Emporia State volleyball team swept past the Newman Jets on Wednesday with a 25-10, 25-23, 25-22 win. The Hornets hit .314 overall and finished with eight team blocks to move to 9-0 on the season.
With both ESU middle hitter out due to injury Arica Shepard stepped up with her best match of the season. Three days after setting the career kills record at Emporia State she went for 18 kills and had a double-double with 11 digs while hitting .455 on the evening.
Brittney Miller added her best performance on the season 15 kills and hitting .444 for ESU. Nicole Gingery in her first start as a freshman had five kills and also finished with a match high five blocks. Amy Byfield finished in double-digit digs for the Hornets with 10 while Ting Liu added 34 assists. Liu also finished with seven digs, three blocks and two kills.
#3 ESU will travel to Warrensburg, Mo. to take on Edinboro at 4 p.m. on Sept. 12 as part of the UCM Peggy Martin Challenge.
