October 17, 2009-One day after an emotional 3-2 victory over #7 Washburn, #8 Emporia State swept Ft. Hays State 3-0 on Saturday night in White Auditorium.
In the first set ESU hit .333 as Arica Shepard opened up the scoring with tw straight kills. The Hornets jumped out 5-1 early and would never look back never leading by less than two as they rolled to a 25-17 win.
In the second set ESU hit .316, but fell behind early trailing 6-2. ESU would then use an 8-4 run to take a 10-9 advantage. The two teams would play to five ties over the next 10 points before ESU grabbed a foothold with a 18-15 lead. ESU scored seven of the last 11 points for the 25-19 victory.
ESU did their best hitting in the final set hitting .389 and opening on a 3-0 run. They closest the Tigers would get is 4-2 as ESU used a 7-4 to build their lead to 17-10. ESU would only allow four more points running out with the 25-14 win.
Ting Liu had a double-double with 37 assists and 13 digs as ESU hit .346 as a team. Brittany Miller had a match high 14 kills on .500 hitting with five blocks while Arica Shepard added 12 kills and a match high 16 digs for the Hornets.
The Hornets held the Tigers to .096 hitting on the night with 10.0 blocks and 56 digs. Amy Byfield pused her double-figure dig match streak to 18 as she finished with 12 digs.
ESU is back in action on Wednesday night against #20 Truman in White Auditorium. The Hornets will "Volley for the Cure" against the Bulldogs with all fans wearing pink being admitted free. There will be 200 pink "Volley for the Cure" t-shirts available for a donation to the Emporia area JuneBug Cancer Foundation. TSU defeated ESU in last year's South Central Regional Championship match and have ended ESU's season the last three years.
