October 9, 2009-For the first time in Emporia State history, KFFX-FM will provide live play by play of a Hornet volleyball match on Friday, October 16 when ESU takes on Washburn. Coverage of the potential top ten version of the Turnpike Tussle will begin at 6:50 p.m. on Mix 104.9 FM and kvoe.com.
"Mix 104.9, as the Voice of the Hornets, wants to do whatever possible to promote ESU Athletics," Ron Thomas, general manager of KFFX/KVOE said. "The Hornet volleyball squad is a national power, and that coupled with Washburn as the opponent on a Gold Rush night added up to a perfect opportunity for the radio station to bring that excitement to the air waves."
The radio "Voice of the Hornets" Greg Rahe will handle the play by play while Karri Kimberlin will provide color commentary.
"We are very appreciative of all the great coverage we get from the Emporia media," said Bing Xu, ESU head volleyball coach. "We would like to thank Mix 104.9 for giving fans another way of following our team."
This will be the first meeting between the two since then #6 ESU defeated then #10 WU 3-0 in front of an MIAA record crowd of 2,432 at White Auditorium on Nov. 14, 2008 to secure the Hornets first MIAA volleyball championship. Heading into this weekend's action, the two teams are both currently ranked in the AVCA Top Ten with a combined record of 37-4 on the year.
The match has been designated a "Gold Rush" Night at White Auditorium with the first 100 ESU students receiving a free "Be Loud, Gold & Proud" t-shirt and the first 200 fans overall getting a free mini-volleyball courtesy of the match sponsor, Emporia State Federal Credit Union.
