October 31, 2009 -- The #9 Emporia State volleyball team swept by #20 Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday in Omaha. The Hornets hit .264 for the afternoon in the 25-17, 25-20 and 26-24 win.
In set number one ESU scored eight of the first 12 points as they rolled out to a 8-4 advantage. UNO would never get any closer than four as ESU cruised to the 25-17 victory. Brittney Miller finished set number one with seven kills on ten attempts.
In the second set the two teams played to early ties at 4-4 and 5-5 before UNO got on a roll and took an 11-7 advantage. ESU would cut the lead to 13-12 coming out of a time-out before the Mavericks rolled their advantage back to 16-13. ESU would then scored 12 of the last 17 points and take home a 25-20 victory.
ESU came out hot in the third set jumping out to a 5-1 advantage early behind the strength of two kills and a service ace. The lead would get as big as 10-5 before UNO started to rally cutting the lead to 13-12. The teams would play tight for the rest of the set, never getting further than two points apart as ESU pulled out a narrow 26-24 victory.
Miller lead all players finishing with a career high 22 kills while hitting .588 on the afternoon. All-American Arica Shepard finished with her seventh straight double-double with 11 kills and 16 digs. All-American Ting Liu added her third straight double-double with 39 assists and 16 digs. Katelyn Schmidtberger added 10 digs as Amy Byfield added 14 digs.
ESU will return home on Nov. 6 to face #24 Pittsburg State at 7 p.m. from W. L. White Auditorium.
