#3 ESU DEFEATS #18 NEBRASKA-OMAHA 3-2

September 26, 2009 -- The #3 Emporia State volleyball team came out on top of a battle with #18 Nebraska-Omaha 3-2 on Saturday. The Hornets hit .311 on the day as they fought to a 25-15, 30-32, 25-18, 22-25, 15-13 victory.

ESU and UNO played back and fourth volleyball through the first game as it seesawed until ESU used a four point run to break out to a 25-18 win. In set number two ESU came from down 8-4 at one point to push the match into extras falling 32-30. In set number three ESU came out on fire scoring the first four points on their way to a 25-18 victory. In the fourth set the Mavericks answered back rolling out to a 10-6 lead and holding back a late ESU charge on their way to the 25-22 defeat of ESU. In the final set ESU jumped out 6-0, but the Mavericks battled back getting as close as 14-13 before a service error gave ESU the five set win.

All-American Arica Shepard had her eighth straight double-double of the season with 21 kills and 20 digs. It is her first double-double in which over 20 kills and over 20 digs. Ting Liu added a double-double for the Hornets going for 59 assists and adding a career high 18 digs to her seven kills and three service aces. Katelyn Kaiser had a career high 16 kills in her first match back from injury while hitting .536 on the afternoon. Brittney Miller added 12 kills for her eighth double figure kill match in her last ten. Amy Byfield had a season high 27 digs and Jenna Snook had 11 digs.

Next week the Hornets will travel to the Lady Blues Crossover on Oct. 2 and 3 where they will open against #7 West Texas A & M.
