September 16, 2009 -- After dropping the first set against #19 Truman the Emporia State volleyball team steamed back to take a 3-1 victory in Kirksville, Mo. The Hornets dominated at the net as they outblocked the Bulldogs 13-5 on their way to a 23-25, 25-17, 25-15, 25-20 victory.
ESU fell behind early in the first set, but behind the serving of Ting Liu would get within three at 23-20 before falling 25-23. In set number two tied at 3-3 ESU would score four straight points and wouldn't look back rolling to a 25-17 win. In set three ESU had four runs greater than three points cruising to the 25-15 victory. In the final set the Hornets got out to a 20-15 lead before staving off a last second charge for the 25-20 defeat.
Arica Shepard led the way with her 21st career 20+ kill match as she record 20 kills while hitting .475 on the night. She is the ESU career record holder in 20+ kill matches with 11 more than the next closest Hornet. She also finished with a double-double as she added 11 digs for the match. Brianne Boner added 10 kills along with tieing a season high with seven blocks. Brittney Miller also finished with double figure kills she recorded ten for ESU. Amy Byfield and Megan Lueger led the way defensively as they each finished with 15 digs. Ting Liu added a 47 assists along with a season high four service aces as the Hornets recorded seven service aces on the evening.
The Hornets will come back to Emporia this weekend to face Missouri Western in their home opener. First serve is set for 7 p.m. from W. L. White Auditorium.
