October 9, 2009 -- The #8 Emporia State volleyball team swept past Pittsburg State 3-0 on the road on Friday. The Hornets outhit the Gorillas .323 to .218 in the 25-17, 25-17 and 30-28 victory.
The Hornets started out hitting the ball well, hitting .421 for the opening set. ESU used early runs to build a 10-6 advantage before not letting the Gorillas get any closer than three points on the way to a 25-17 win.
In set number two ESU jumped out early on three service aces by Katelyn Schmidtberger as they rolled out to a 10-4 lead. Pitt State would get no closer than four points as ESU again took a 25-17 victory.
In set number three PSU jumped out to a 5-1 advantage before ESU rollef back getting six of the next nine points to make it an 8-7 lead for PSU. The teams would then play to two lead changes and two different lead changes before again knotting the score at 18 points. ESU then jumped out to a 24-21 lead, that would quickly be erased as the score was tied at 24 apiece. After playing to a tie again at 28 All-Americans Arica Shepard and Ting Liu added kills to close out the match at 30-28 Emporia State.
Shepard starts a fresh double-double streak as she finished with 17 kills and 14 digs. Liu joined her with a double-double of her own going for 39 assists and 15 digs. Brittney Miller added 14 kills for the Hornets and was joined in double-figures by Katelyn Schmidtberger who had 10 kills. Liu added two service aces as did Jocelyn DeMotte to the three for Schmidtberger. Amy Byfield moved within two of the ESU career double-figure digs record as she had 18 on the night.
ESU will face Missouri Southern tomorrow with first serve set for 2 p.m. from Joplin, Mo.
