October 23, 2009 -- The #7 Emporia State volleyball team rebounded with a 3-0 sweep on the road at Missouri Western. The Hornets hit .353 on the night on the way to the 25-19, 25-19 and 25-19 win.
In the first set the game started back and fourth reaching ties at 3-3 and 5-5 and against at nine all. ESU then scored six of the next seven points to build a 16-11 advantage. They then would not let the Griffons get any closer than three as they cruised to a 25-19 win.
In the second set after again having the set tied at three ESU went on a 7-3 run to build a 10-4 lead. They then scored six straight off the service of Ting Liu to take a 16-6 advantage. MWSU would cut the lead to four at 23-19, but wouldn't get any closer in a 25-19 victory.
In the third set ESU would score 11 of the first 16 points to build an early 11-5 lead. ESU would then lead as much as 21-13 before the Griffons again rallied to cut the lead to 23-19. ESU would score the final two points on the night taking the match with a 25-19 win.
All-American Arica Shepard was the only Hornet in double figures as she had her fourth straight double-double with 18 kills and 13 digs on .471 hitting. She passes Truman's Sarah Shearman to move into the fifth all-time in career kills in the MIAA with her 1,881st career kill. Katelyn Schmidtberger had the best hitting night of her career thus far hitting .316 with nine kills and six digs. Amy Byfield had double figures in digs for the 19th straight match with 12 on the evening. Ting Liu had her double-double streak snapped at three as she finished with 36 assists and eight digs. Katelyn Kaiser and Brianne Boner each finished with seven kills while Kasier finished with four blocks.
ESU will face Northwest Missouri tomorrow at 6 p.m. in Maryville, Mo.
