#6 ESU SWEEPS PAST SWOSU

October 3, 2009 -- The #6 Emporia State volleyball team rolled to a second consecutive sweep as the knocked off Southwestern Oklahoma this morning in the Lady Blues Crossover in Topeka, Kan. ESU hit .419 on their way to a 25-16, 25-14 and 25-15 win.

In set number one ESU jumped out to a 3-0 lead behind the serving of Ting Liu. They would then score eight of the last ten points as they rolled to the 25-16 victory.

In set number two Arica Shepard served for five straight points including an ace to help ESU roll out to 6-0 lead on their way to an 8-1 advantage. Shepard followed that up with three straight kills and the end to help close out the 25-14 win.

In the final set ESU fell behind early but rallied and took a 12-7 lead on six straight points off the serve of Jenna Snook. ESU wouldn't look back as SWOSU would not get any closer six points on the way to a 25-15 victory.

Shepard extended her double-double streak to 11 matches with 11 kills and 15 digs while hitting .611 for the morning. Katelyn Schmidtberger added a career high 12 kills to go along with eight digs. Caitlyn Murray had a career high eight kills while hitting .412 for the match. Amy Byfield had 16 digs and is now within four of becoming the ESU career record holder in double figure dig matches. Ting Liu added 39 assists and four kills while hitting .400 for the Hornets.

The Hornets will now face Southeastern Oklahoma State this afternoon at 1 p.m. in Topeka, Kan.
