October 2, 2009 -- The #6 Emporia State volleyball team hit .322 as they rolled to a sweep over Angelo State. The Hornets outblocked the Rambelles 6-2 on their way to a 25-23, 25-22, 25-15 victory in the afternoon session of the Lady Blues Crossover in Topeka, Kan.
Set number one started out as a back and fourth affair tied going into the ninth point. The Rambelles then found a foothold as they ran out to a 17-12 advantage. The Hornets they scored nine of the next ten points to take a 20-18 lead and did not look back cruising to the 25-23 win.
In set number two ASU again came storming out of the gate taking a 5-1 advantage and later leading 8-3. ESU would then score five straight points to tie the match and score nine of the next ten overall to take a 11-9 advantage. After ASU took a 20-19 lead ESU scored five straight for the second time to roll to the 25-22 victory.
In the final set ESU would lead from the first whistle at one point using an 8-0 run to keep the Rambelles at bay. They would score eight of the final 15 points to roll to the 25-15 win.
All-American Arica Shepard had her third straight 20-kill match and tenth straight double-double as she finished with 20 kills and 15 digs on the afternoon. With her 20 kills she passed Washburn's Jill Gassen to move into 10th All-Time in the MIAA in kills. She is the first MIAA volleyball player to move into the top ten since the 2003 season. Amy Byfield finished with 15 digs and was joined in double figures by Megan Lueger with 14 and Jenna Snook with 10 digs. Ting Liu finished the match with 38 assists for the Hornets.
ESU will next be in action tomorrow morning when they face Southwestern Oklahoma at 9 a.m. in the Lady Blues Crossover in Topeka, Kan.
